Jay Hayes

Bangor - Jay F. Hayes, 81, died on Friday November 1, 2013 at the Maine Veterans Home, Bangor, after living eighty one years of a rich and wonderful life. Mr. Hayes was born in Bangor, the son of Walter F. Hayes and Winifred Catherine (McGee) Hayes. He attended Bangor public schools and was graduated from John Bapst High School. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He was graduated from the University of Maine, Orono, where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity. Jay earned a Master's degree from the University of Hartford, followed by advanced graduate study at Trinity College and Yale University, where he was awarded a Coe Fellowship. He was a member of Phi Delta Kappa Honor Society. Mr. Hayes was an original member of the faculty of Ellington High School in Connecticut where he taught Advanced Placement U.S. History and American Government and served as Chairman of the Social Studies Department for 34 years. Jay was a founding member of the Church of St. Luke in Ellington. He retired in 1992 and returned to Maine, living on Cobbossee Lake in East
Winthrop before moving to Bangor in 1997. Jay especially enjoyed traveling and exploring many fascinating parts of the world with his wife, Ann. In addition to his parents Jay was predeceased by his wife of 54 years Ann (Duerr) Hayes; brothers Gerald, Byron and Charles Hayes; sisters Lucille Fisher and Joan Eberhart. He is survived by his sister Nancy Hickey and her husband Jack; Sister-in-law Jacqueline Hayes; several nieces and nephews; special friends Debbie and Mark Brooks. The family would like to thank Dr. David Koffman and the staff at the Maine Veterans Home, Bangor for the love and care that Jay received. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11am Thursday November 7, 2013 at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. John’s Catholic Church, 207 York St., Bangor. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith 163 Center St., Bangor following the service. Interment will be in Mt. Pleasant Catholic Cemetery, Bangor.
