Jeptha Milton Gibbs V, 51, died unexpectedly at his residence in Hampden, Me., January 15, 2015. He was born in Chicago, Illinois, on January 28, 1963, the son of Jeptha M. IV, and Melissa (Meyers) Gibbs. He was married to Cathy (Cline) Gibbs, originally from Campobello Island, NB, on March 1, 1986.

JM was raised in New York City and attended Trinity School throughout high school. After a year at Skidmore College, he enrolled in the US Navy on May 25, 1983. He was stationed in Alameda, CA on the USS Flint as an Electronics Technician until 1989. In 1992, he joined the Naval Reserves and he served in many capacities, including on the Security Readiness Review Team in Afghanistan. He received the Air Force Achievement Medal in 2005 for the Operation Enduring Freedom mission. In 2006, JM joined the Air National Guard as a Technical Sergeant and he was promoted to Master Sergeant in 2010. During his military career, JM served in both Gulf Wars, and he retired after 28 total years of service. In 2012, he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for Outstanding Service to the US Air Force. JM mentored and befriended countless people throughout his years in the military, and he played a significant role in shaping the Air National Guard 102nd Network Warfare Squadron into what it is today.

JM graduated from New York University with a Bachelors degree in Economics. He was employed at Chemical Bank while a student at NYU and after graduation worked for the Chief Economist, Dr. Irwin Kellner at Chemical and Manufacturers Hanover Trust. He held many positions at Chase Bank and at the time of his death he was in IT Security and Risk Management.

In August of 2014, after selling their home in Dobbs Ferry, NY, JM moved to Maine to pursue his dream of building and operating a NASCar racing-themed pub that had been scheduled to open this spring in Ellsworth. Cathy was to join him in Ellsworth in April. JM was active in many community-based projects and charities in the Ellsworth area and beyond. His hobbies included cooking, beer-making and a budding interest in bee-keeping and goat husbandry. JM is survived by his mother, Melissa Gibbs of NYC; his wife, Cathy Gibbs of Hartsdale, New York; his daughter, Mary Taylor Christina Gibbs of Austin, Texas; and his sister, Mary Melissa Gibbs Lee of Ketchum, Idaho.
