Joan E. Bush
Carmel
Joan “Gigi” E. Bush, 76, died April 25, 2015 at home, where she wanted to be, with her family by her side. She was born in Carmel, August 11, 1938, daughter of Guy A. and Dorothy (Emery) Hawes, Sr.
She was most well known as a waitress at Ho-Jo’s, where she worked for over 36 years. Her customers loved her, requesting to sit in her section year after year. Joan looked forward to going to work to visit with her customers that became just like her family and she would even bring in some of her famous homemade jam to share with them. This is where she met her “Prince,” Jim. He and his “Cinderella” lived happily ever after in Carmel, until alzhiemers took away her “Prince” in 2012. After that, Drew moved in with his Gigi and helped her through her last few years.
Gigi was a die-hard Red Sox fan, staying up until the wee hours to see the game to the end. Playing Skip-Bo was one of her favorite things to do and if there was a grand tally, of wins and losses, she would surely be the winner.
She was a member of Millwee Chapter #198 OES of Orrington, and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary of Carmel.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by, her first husband and father of her children, Harold Stevens, Sr., her second husband, Norman Bush and her “Prince” James Umble, Sr., also two brothers, Richard and Maynard Hawes, Sr.
