BANGOR - Joan Barbara Glans, 80, passed away Friday, December 17, 2021, at a local hospital, after a period of declining health. She was born January 14, 1941, in East Providence, Rhode Island, the daughter of John and Mary (Cunningham) Clough. Joan was a graduate of East Providence High School and Rhode Island College. She had a love for education as demonstrated by her career start as an elementary school teacher in North Smithfield Rhode Island, and various schools in the Bangor area. She was also employed in various offices in the Bangor area including several years as the Church secretary at Grace United Methodist Church. Joan found great fulfillment in her work as a dedicated member of the Bangor Emblem Club. She served as Maine State President from 1987 to 1988. She was also active members of the B.P.O.E. No. 244 and the Brewer Eagles Club. In her free time, Joan enjoyed traveling with many trips throughout the states including Alaska and Hawaii. In addition to her parents, Joan was predeceased by her brother, John Clough; her late husbands, Edward Belhumeur who passed in 1969, and James Glans who passed in 2004. She is survived by her daughter, Valerie Alex and her husband, Steve, of Penn Valley, California; sons, Douglas Belhumeur, of Bangor, Ken Chase and his wife, Lisa, of Bangor; grandchildren, Erika Alex, of Hawthorne, California, Kristina Alex of New York, New York, and Caroline Belhumeur of Davenport, Florida; sister, Marilyn Murphy and her husband, Rick, of Knoxville, Tennessee; brother, Robert Clough and his wife, Barbara, of East Providence, Rhode Island. She is also survived by her longtime partner, Albert “Jim” Grover of Bangor. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, January 14, 2022, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor.
