Joan Martin

January 19, 1939 — March 23, 2019

BANGOR – Joan P. Martin, 80, passed away March 23, 2019, at St. Joseph Hospital. Joan was born January 19, 1939, in Bangor, the daughter of Paul J. and Imelda M. (Fournier) Martin. Joan graduated from John Bapst High School, Class of 1957. She worked for many years as a secretary for the Boy Scouts of America, Katahdin Area Council. From 1974 until her retirement, she was a secretary at the University of Maine Admissions Office in Orono.
Joan loved nature and enjoyed taking her older nieces and nephews along on outdoor excursions to go fishing and clamming, attend Boy Scout Jamborees and parades, or take in the view at Schoodic Point, one of her favorite places. Joan was a gardener and an animal lover, devoted to her pets, both cats and dogs.
Throughout her life, Joan was an active and generous volunteer. As a young woman, she sewed hundreds of doll outfits for Christmas Toy Drives conducted by the Bangor Fire Department. She coordinated the phonathon for United Cerebral Palsy of Maine for over a decade and served on the UCP Board. She was a literacy volunteer, and in early retirement helped build the Orono Bog Walk as a volunteer. Until very recently, Joan drove cancer patients to and from treatments for Cancer Care of Maine. She was a long time volunteer at the Bangor Homeless Shelter. She was a recipient of the Jefferson Award for Outstanding Community Service.
In addition to her parents, Joan was predeceased by her brother, Paul Martin, Jr.; sister-in-law, Betty Martin; and her brother-in-law, Larry Griffin. Surviving are two sisters, Lorraine Griffin of Old Town, Janet Cammack, and Janet’s husband, Walter of Brewer; and many nieces and nephews.
A service of remembrance will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 1, 2019 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center Street, Bangor. Interment will be at Mt. Pleasant Catholic Cemetery, Ohio Street, Bangor. Relatives and friends are invited to share in conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center Street, Bangor. Those who wish to remember Joan in a special way may make donations in her memory to the Bangor Area Homeless Shelter, 263 Main Street, Bangor.
