John Butts

Eddington - John Wayne Butts, 66, passed away at Eastern Maine Medical Center on the morning of February 9, 2015. John was born in Brunswick, Georgia on February 19, 1948. He is preceded in death by his father, Prather Butts, his mother and stepfather Patricia and Lindsey Wright, and his eldest daughter Andrea Van Velzen. He is survived by his devoted wife Cindy Butts of Eddington, Maine, his daughter Sonya and her husband Douglas Hughes of Boston, Massachusetts and his son Shaun and his wife Laura Butts of Orlando, Florida, his stepson Christopher and his wife Wendy Burtchell and stepdaughter Bobbi Jo and her husband Marcus Bernier, of Mars Hill, Maine. He is blessed with five grandchildren; Bennett and Juliet Butts of Orlando, Florida, Tyson Cyr and Makayla Bernier of Mars Hill, Maine, and Jonathan Richard Van Velzen of Brunswick, Georgia. He is survived by his brothers Danny, Bobby, and Ronnie Butts, his sister Lisa Spores, and six nieces and nephews. John was a proud veteran, with 20 years of honorable service in both war and peacetime in the United States Air Force. After retiring from active duty in 1989, he continued his career of public service as Director of Public Works for the towns of Fort Fairfield, Maine and Brunswick, Georgia, and as the Town Manager of Holden, Maine. John was an avid outdoorsman, and a registered Maine Guide; such was his love of hunting and fishing the woods and lakes of Maine that he returned there to work and retire in his later years. John was an active member of the River City Wesleyan Church, serving as a member of the Local board of Administrators, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, and as Director of the nursery.
Funeral services to honor and remember John’s life will be held Thursday, February 12, 2015 at the River City Wesleyan Church 146 Center St., Bangor. Friends are welcome to call from 11:00am until time of service. Spring interment with Military Honors will be held at the Maine Veteran’s Cemetery, Caribou. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be presented to the River City Wesleyan Church, 146 Center Street, Bangor, ME 04401.
