John Lloyd Dudley, 84, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on November 28, 2022. He was born April 12, 1938 in Bangor to Lloyd and Kathleen (Kay) (Hamm) Dudley.
John and wife Karen (Richmond) met at Mattanawcook Academy in Lincoln and were inseparable until her death in 2020. Upon John’s graduation from the University of Maine, Orono in 1960 he embarked upon a lifetime career in sales. First in the beverage industry and then as a self-employed entrepreneur, owning and operating a Tuff Kote automotive rustproofing business in Presque Isle. John was a born people person and thoroughly enjoyed his work. His infectious good nature, ‘wicked’ sense of humor and knack for remembering everyone’s name made him a natural salesman.
John and Karen raised three children, first in Bangor and then Presque Isle. Summers were spent and lifetime memories were made at the family camp at Green Lake. John enjoyed trout fishing in Boggy Brook, horseshoes and of course there was always a cribbage board present. In their later years they settled back in Bangor to be closer to family and John once again found himself in the beverage sales business. During this time they also spent many enjoyable winters in Panama City Beach, Florida.
As happens in older age health issues took their toll, first taking Karen, and with her a piece of him, in 2020. John fought as hard as he could, and often you could see the old spark in his eye, but a recent bout with pneumonia and a desire to be reunited with Karen tempered the fight. He spent his last few weeks comfortably with son John and daughter in-law Patti enjoying endless reruns of MASH and nightly cribbage games. True to form he swept the last three games he played with Patti, and the twinkle in his eye was there that night.
John is survived by his children; John and wife, Patti of Orono, Lauren McCloskey of Broomfield, CO and Scott Dudley of Ellsworth; grandchildren; John Dudley and wife, Ashley, Kiley Millen and husband, Michael, Jordan Dudley and wife, Joy, and Meghan McCloskey and husband, Fred Shattell; great-grandchildren; Ethan, Eli and Easton Dudley, Nathan Dudley, Emma Land, Cole and Logan Millen, and Rowan Shattell; sister Susanne Mcleod; sister-in-law Joyce Marshall; nephews; Conor and Logan McLeod and Don Marshall; and dear friend, Christi Clark. John was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Karen, son-in law Terry McCloskey, brother-in-law Jim McLeod and nephew Skip Marshall.
There will be no service at this time. Interment will be private. A Celebration of Life will be held this coming summer when all will be invited to join and share many happy memories.
