Newburgh
John E. Frey passed away on Saturday, January 26, 2019 after a brief illness. John was born January 13, 1926, in Bangor, the son of Florence (Blackwell) and Francis Frey. He was industrious and as a young teen got his first job at Conner Coal and Wood in Brewer. He didn’t stop working until 72 years later when he retired as the transfer station director for the town of Dixmont. Many of those years he drove truck for companies that include Mack Backing, Green Valley Lumber and Robinson Kenny. He was very proud when Mack Truck recognized his driving a big rig over a million miles. He was a kind man who would start a conversation with anyone and people from all walks of life enjoyed his company.
John married Winona Rumery on November 9, 1946, and celebrated 53 years of marriage before her death in November 1999. Winona demonstrated great patience with John particularly around buying and selling cars. He never saw a car for sale that wasn’t a good deal or selling a car an even better deal. He could repair any vehicle which made him popular at the local auto parts store.
John is survived by five of his children and their spouses; David and Sandi Frey of Hampden, Sheila and Hugh Cole of Levant, Victoria and Roger Davis of Newburgh, Dennis and Linda Frey of Swanville, daughter-in-law, Arlene Frey of Hampden, Michael and Cynthia Frey of Dixmont as well as eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a son, Randy and a special granddaughter, Laura Frey as well as siblings, Paul, Mary, Gus and Florence.
There will be a graveside service scheduled in April at Lakeview Cemetery, Hampden. John loved all animals and with that in mind, donations may be made in his memory to the Bangor Humane Society, 693 Mt. Hope Ave., Bangor.
