John Mabee

March 8, 1944 — October 16, 2021

John Warren Mabee, age 77, passed away peacefully on October 16, 2021 at his home surrounded by close friends and family. He was born March 8, 1944 in Boston, MA the son of Dr. James Robert Mabee, a prominent oral surgeon and cleft palette specialist in the Bangor area, and Marguerite Waite Mabee.

Growing up in Bangor, John graduated from Bangor High School in 1962, the University of Maine in 1967, then followed the family tradition and pursued his professional education in the dentistry field. In 1972 at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland John received a Doctor of Dental Science degree, then continued to Boston University to earn Master of Science in Dentistry specializing in Periodontology in 1974 and an Advanced Graduate Degree in Periodontology in 1976. After his schooling, John returned home to raise a family and begin his 30-year practice in the Bangor area.

John will be sadly missed by his surviving family and friends. John was pre-deceased by a sister Marguerite ‘Peg’ Mabee in 1986. John is survived by his daughter, Jennifer (Mabee) Brinkley of Watertown, MA and Bucksport; his son James (J.R.) Mabee and wife Leslie Winchester-Mabee of Bangor and Grand Lake Stream; and six grandchildren, Max and Emelia Brinkley, Nolan, Ashton, Adella, and Rheannon Mabee.

John cared for people and was kind and generous to everyone. He was loved by all that got to know him. He’d leave the house in the middle of the night to help a patient in pain. He enjoyed woodworking and fixing things building a house from the ground up with his own two hands. He could tie a trout fly or remove one painlessly from his sons ear or a woman’s lip. A natural athlete, avid outdoorsman he enjoyed both Nordic and Alpine skiing, sailing, snorkeling, diving, fishing, hunting, walks in the woods, and could really turn heads when seen on a water ski! He loved animals especially his dogs and was an amazing self-taught birder being able to identify most avian species at a glance or by song. A university of Maine hockey season ticket holder since the beginning as well as an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan.

John’s family would like to thank Bucksport Regional Health Center and Kindred at Home and Hospice for their wonderful care and support, and express deep gratitude to his local fellowship members for their kindness and friendship.

Burial services will be held Saturday, November 27, 2021 at 1pm at Mount Hope Cemetery in Bangor. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to H.O.M.E. Inc in Orland, ME.
