DR. JOHN EDWARD MCCARTY PHD
BREWER - Dr. John Edward McCarty PhD, 85, of Brewer, ME, son of Harold Hull McCarty and Vivian Elva (McClenahan) McCarty, died, 31 October, 2013, surrounded by his loved ones. John was born 27 August 1928, in Iowa City, Iowa.
John attended the University of Iowa experimental schools, graduating from University High School in 1946, the University of Iowa with a BS degree in chemistry in 1950. He attended the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) and worked under the direction of Donald J. Cram, receiving a PhD degree in January of 1957. While at UCLA he met Barbara Irene Merriman and they married, 3 September 1955, in Pacific Palisades, California.
Shortly before his PhD was granted he began post-doctoral work at the University of Kansas. John worked with C. A. VanderWerf and continued with F. Sherwood Rowland. Barbara and John’s daughter Susan was born, 4 April 1959, in Lawrence, Kansas. Shortly after her birth John was hired as an Assistant Professor of Chemistry at Mankato State College (Minnesota State University, Mankato) and the family moved to Mankato. John and Barbara’s son James was born, 4 April 1962, in Mankato.
While teaching at Mankato State, John continued his research with two National Science Foundation grants and several subsequent publications in technical journals. John took early retirement in 1987 and he and Barbara moved to Maine, planning to open a bed and breakfast. After considerable searching, they purchased a federal period home, built about 1775, in Waldoboro. Barbara named it Blue Skye Farm. They restored the home and converted the small barn behind it to a two bedroom cottage.
In the fall of 1991 John was hired to teach chemistry at Unity College in Maine, where he taught Chemistry, Physics, and Music Appreciation, for eight years. During his tenure at Unity, he designed the new wing which houses the chemistry and computer science laboratories. John was appointed Faculty Marshal, leading the procession at the Unity College 1999 graduation, after which he retired.
John and Barbara sold Blue Skye Farm in 2000. They spent time in both Kittery ME, and Newmarket NH before returning to Brewer Maine in 2004 at their children’s request.
John was pre-deceased by his wife of 49 years, Barbara, 1 October 2004.
He is survived by his brother and sister in law, Robert and Elizabeth McCarty of Montbello, CA, his daughter and son in law Susan and Heinz Sell, and grand daughters Erica Engel and Julia Sell, of Cushing, ME, his son and daughter in law James and Betty McCarty and grand children Michelle and Kyle Miller and Ashley Burgess, and great grandchildren Reese and Connor, all of Bangor, ME, as well as numerous nephews and nieces, their spouses and children.

A memorial service for John McCarty will be held 11 AM Saturday November 9, 2013, at Brookings- Smith, 133 Center Street, Bangor, with the Rev. Peter Jenks officiating. Interment will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery, Brewer. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith 163 Center St., Bangor, immediately following the committal.
