John T. McLeod, 94, passed away peacefully on a Sunday morning, April 2, 2017, while home with family after his aged body was unable to overcome the complications of this winter's illnesses. He was born December 10, 1922, in Bangor, the son of John T. and Madeliene P. (Bridge) McLeod.
John was a longtime resident of Bangor, residing most of his life on outer Ohio Street, with his
late wife, Marion. Both were faithful in worship at the Pilgrim Orthodox Presbyterian Church of
Bangor. Most often, John could be found in his garage, working on a vehicle for a friend or
family. John was an excellent mechanic, which served him well in hobby and career.
John enlisted into the US Navy as soon as he was of age and served during World War II
aboard the USS Guest, in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. He was honorably discharged
into the reserves with a WWII Victory Medal, EAME Area Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign
Medal, and US Navy Good Conduct Medal. He then took to work with NH Bragg. Knowing of
John’s reputation as a skilled and honest mechanic, a friend encouraged John to apply to the
Air National Guard in Bangor. John accepted a full time position in the ANG, and became a
“lifer,” retiring as a Senior Master Sergeant (E-8) from the Aerospace Ground Equipment work
section in 1982. John was recognized with a meritorious award for greatly reducing the
downtime of all assigned equipment and for keeping the equipment in a state of operational
readiness. He also received an hourglass award, recognizing his 20 years of military service,
and a perfect attendance medal. Additionally, John was a longtime member of the ANG bowling
team which traveled to national competitions across the country. After retirement, John could be
found with the “boys”, gathering at Union Street McDonalds for breakfast every Thursday
morning and attending annual family and friends events on base.
John was always smiling and ready to tease an unsuspecting friend by tugging an ear or
grabbing a nose. He loved his ice cream, candy and snacks. He made the best grilled cheese
sandwich. He enjoyed vacationing, travel, and the company of good friends, most recently
Gloria and his care attendant, Debby. Above all else, John loved serving his God, his Country,
and his Family.
John, predeceased by his wife Marion, will be sorely missed by their sons; John, his wife Judi, of
Mission Viejo, CA.; David, his wife Elaine, of Hermon, ME; and James, his wife Bethshan, of
Concord, VA. John will be missed by his grandchildren: Jennifer Crady, Steven McLeod,
Heather Rushmore, Jonathan McLeod, Rebecca Wright, Nicole Hachey, Merrianne Nissly,
Matthew McLeod, Mark McLeod, Micah McLeod, Malachi McLeod, Michael McLeod, Moriah
McLeod, Marissa McLeod and their families, which include his 11 great grandchildren.
Funeral services with military honors will be held graveside, 10 AM, Monday, July 3, 2017 at Oak Grove Cemetery, Finson Road, Bangor, with Rev. Richard M. Dickinson, presiding. The family asks that you consider a donation on John’s behalf to the Maineiac Charities Foundation, PO Box 2764, Bangor, ME 04401.
