John M. Webber
Bangor
John Marshall Webber (age 78), a long time Bangor resident, passed away peacefully in his hometown on Monday October 24, 2022 with family members - his daughters Karyn Bournival and Andrea Webber – by his side. John had been dealing with a series of illnesses for the past few years and had most recently been residing at the Dirigo Pines assisted living facility in Orono where the staff had been skillfully providing much appreciated care and compassion to John.
The son of G. Peirce and Florence Webber, who predeceased him, John attended local schools where at a young age he demonstrated considerable talent as an artist. At age 13 John was asked to put on a one-man show at an Interstate Art Fair in South Carolina. John graduated from the University of Maine in 1970 with a Bachelor's Degree in Art. Throughout his life, John had a keen interest in art as any tour of his home demonstrated. Collecting treasures from the Far East, and displaying them prominently, were a particular interest, and passion, for John.
John served his country admirably as a proud member of an elite division of the United States Marine Corps with assignments taking him to various destinations around the world. A recognized high expert rifleman, he received numerous promotions during his service with the USMC. The stories he told of his adventures were beyond fascinating.
An academic, philosophy was a specialty; John relished stimulating conversations in this subject matter and enjoyed teaching other interested parties as well. He was well known in and around Orono in the library, classroom buildings and also at the counter at Pat's Pizza!
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his sister Emily (Webber Spetnagel). He is survived by his daughter Karyn and son-in-law Mike Bournival, daughter Andrea and nephew Steven Spetnagel, as well as by three grandchildren: Ian, Aryn and Chase. In addition, every squirrel in Bangor is likely mourning John's passing as feeding them walnuts OFTEN was not just an activity but a savored ritual.
A funeral service will be held 1:00 pm Thursday, November 3, 2022 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., following the service. Interment will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Bangor.
