Joseph Murray

October 8, 1939 — February 15, 2016

Joseph Patrick Murray, 76, died after a period of poor health February 15, 2016 at the Maine Veterans’ Home in Bangor. He was born October 8, 1939 in Manhattan, NY, the son of Joseph P. and Mildred (O’Hearon) Murray.

Joe moved with his family to Bangor when he was 15, and he attended Bangor High School. Thinking formal education was more than he wanted to pursue, Joe joined the U.S. Army on the Monday after his 18th birthday. When he returned from his time of serving his country Joe went to work using his automotive skills. He owned his own speed shop in Brewer. Joe was into “muscle cars” and racing. He was well respected and many sought his advice. Later in his career Joe went to Africa to train mechanics to work on trucks. Anything automotive was considered his hobby. Joe was a diehard MOPAR guy. He was extremely proud of his two sons, Chris and Peter; and his grandchildren just made him beam from ear to ear.

Joe was predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his two sons, Chris Murray and wife Kelly, and their children, Kaitlyn, Zachary, Elizabeth and Emily, and Peter Murray and wife Kristen, and their daughters Madilyn and Jocelyn; sisters Jacqueline Grimes and husband Edgar of Spring Valley, NY, and Barbara Mercer and husband Joe of Lexington, KY; and many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are welcome to call 5-7 p.m. Friday, February 19, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. Services will be held later in the spring or summer, with interment at Mt. Pleasant Catholic Cemetery, Bangor.
