Joseph John Uherec, Known to family as “Jones”
May 14, 1939 – August 19, 2021
Hermon: Joseph (Joe) John Uherec, age 82, passed away on August 19, 2021 at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, Maine of Covid-19 complications.
Joe was born in New York City on May 14, 1939 to Joseph and Emily Uherec (nee Huckemeyer). He graduated from Bryant High School in 1958 and served honorably in the Army (including being stationed in Korea) for four years. Joe worked first for Pan American Airlines and later for the Bank of New York as a computer operator. Extremely hard-working and humble, he also owned a lawn mowing business and held other various part-time jobs throughout his working years. He retired to Maine in 2004, enjoying gardening and caring for his yard, and was the landscaper for Broadway Veterinary Clinic in Bangor at the time of his death.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Doreen Uherec (nee Seckert) of Hermon, his daughter Kimberly Shortall and her husband Sean of Hermon; daughter Delia DeTurris and her husband Fred of Newburgh, NY; a granddaughter Brianna Uherec and her significant other Kyle Sylvia of Hampden; a great-granddaughter Gabriella Higgins, his “little pineapple”, also of Hampden and a sister Margaret “Midge” Uherec of Woodside, NY.
Joe enjoyed watching hockey, baseball and football in his “man cave” with his cat, Timothy, and spending time with his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother who has always put the needs of his family before his own. He was also a jokester and sometimes a prankster, who loved to make people smile and laugh. He will be missed more than words can express.
Joe was a loving pet parent for over 50 years who, along with his wife, rescued and rehabilitated many stray and feral cats. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The F3 Project, where Joe’s granddaughter serves as a member of the Board of Directors. The F3 Project is a Maine nonprofit focused on decreasing the feral and unwanted cat population in Winterport and surrounding towns. Please make checks payable to: The F3 Project, PO Box 769, Winterport, Maine 04496 in memory of Joseph Uherec. Donations may also be accepted through Venmo or PayPal. Venmo “Feline Ferals and Fosters Project”. PayPal F3ProjectMe@gmail.com.
Due to pandemic restraints, there will be a private graveside burial for family. A Catholic Funeral Mass will be held at a later date.
