Joseph Edward Yates Jr. 86 passed away at Northern Light, Eastern Maine Medical Center November 18, 2021

He was born in Scranton, Pa. October 21st, 1935, The son of Joseph E Yates Sr. and Myrtle (Jones) Yates. His family moved to the Hartford Ct. area early in 1941, where he attended various schools in Hartford and East Hartford. He graduated from East Hartford High School in 1954.

He went to work for East Hartford Federal Savings and Loan and began his career in Banking while attending the American Bankers Association school.
In 1953 he joined the Connecticut Air National Guard and was assigned to the Air Police Squadron. In 1955 he was honorably Discharged from the Guard to join the U.S. Navy.

After bootcamp at Bainbridge, MD. he returned home to East Hartford and married Suzanne (Roemer) Yates. While in the Navy he was stationed out of San Diego, CA. aboard the USS Wasp CVS-18. Subsequent duty stations in Newport, RI and the Submarine Base in Groton, CT. until his Honorable Discharge.
After his military service he was employed by United Aircraft (Pratt and Whitney) Division in East Hartford, CT. as a Timekeeper, subsequently attending the Ward School of Electronics studying Computer Basics after which he was transferred to the Data Processing Dept. He was hired as a computer operator for the Bank Computer Center of Connecticut, one of the first multi bank processing centers in the United States.

He worked as a System Programmer for the then First National Granite bank of Augusta, ME. While there he wrote programs and developed systems for D. W Adams a department store in Augusta (Accounts Payable), Stewart and Williams, a construction company (Construction Payroll) and the State of Maine, Liquor Commission (Inventory Control system). In 1965 he started work for Northeastern Computer Center of Bangor, ME. as Operations Manager, and later Vice President of Operations for Maine Information Systems. He continued his career in Bank Data Processing while working for Systematics of Little Rock, AK., Systems Analysis Inc. of Bellevue, WA.

In 1995 he retired from his career in Banking but continued to work in security for the TV show Northern Exposure and finally for Hewlett Packard both in Washington State.
In 1998 he moved back to Bangor and married the former Necia Smith Johnston. His favorite pass times were golf, poker club and cribbage games.
He was a member of the Brotherhood of Elks (BPOE) from 1963 until 2009.

He is survived by his wife of 23 years Necia Smith Johnston Yates, Children: Sharyn Larkin and husband Frank of Orrington, Allison Jack and husband, Paul of Orland, Michael Yates and wife Tracey of Palm Beach Gardens, FL. Stepchildren: Brian Smith and wife Joyce of E. Machias, Alan Smith and wife Ann Marie of Kenduskeag, David Smith and wife Tracy of Hermon and Karen Hill of Pompano Beach. FL, Grandchildren: Daniel Larkin and wife Brandie , Samantha Fry and husband Zachary, Zachary Yates , Bradyn Yates , Suzanne Jack and Hugh Jack.. Step grandchildren: Shauna Rodriguez and husband Edwin, Kurt Smith and wife Kristen, Stephanie Smith and husband Mason, Hannah Smith and Cassie Smith and Joshua Rand and wife Krista, one Great granddaughter Savannah Grace Fry, 9 Step Great Grandchildren and another on the way. He was Predeceased by his first wife of 40 years, Suzanne, in 1995 and one very special grandson, Francis (Frankie) Larkin IV in 1991 and stepson in law, Robert A Hill in 2013.

A service will be later at the Maine Veterans Cemetery, Augusta. Me.
