Joyce M. Swartz, 95, passed away January 27, 2020, at the Maine Veterans Home in Bangor. She was born July 9, 1924, in Bangor, the daughter and eldest child of Ray D. and Phyllis Amy (Manuel) MacKinnon of Brewer.
Joyce attended Brewer schools. After graduating from Brewer High School in 1942, she served in the Coast Guard during World War II. Afterwards, she worked as a federal civilian employee in Florida and, upon returning to Maine, at Dow Air Force Base, the Armed Forces Induction Center, and the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Bangor.
An exemplary example of a dedicated, hard-working employee, she retired from federal service in 1984.
With the assistance of her parents, Joyce built a home on the edge of MacKinnon's Rock Wall Farm in Brewer and raised her three children there. She enjoyed caring for her house and, being the consummate cat lover, spending time with the many kitties who shared her abode over the years. She was a member of the Brewer Historical Society for about 30 years.
Joyce was predeceased by her parents; her sister, Inez Hynes of Lewiston; her brother, Donald MacKinnon of Minnesota; a grandson, Jason Swartz; and her aunt, Inez "Bing" Witham, who helped care for us children when she worked.
She is survived by her sons, Brian F. Swartz and his wife, Susan; Leslie N. Swartz and his wife, Lillian; and her daughter, Tracey S. Smith and her husband, Randy; five grandchildren, Christopher Swartz (Jennifer), Amanda Swartz (Garner), Jared Swartz, Shannon Swartz, and Austin Smith; a great-granddaughter, Emery Swartz; and three step-grandchildren, Rachel, Riley, and Kaitlin Hastey.
Joyce was particularly fond of her sister's children, Patricia Bergin and her husband, John; Danno Hynes and his wife, Stacy; Patrick Hynes and his wife, Heather; and Barry Hynes and his wife, Pam. She always thought so highly of her dear friends and neighbors, Ronnie and Helga Kittredge.
She was a long-time member of Columbia Street Baptist Church in Bangor.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, April 11 at Brookings-Smith Funeral Home, 133 Center St., Bangor, Maine. Those who wish to remember Joyce in a special way may make gifts in her memory to the Bangor Humane Society, 693 Mt. Hope Avenue, Bangor, Maine 04401
