Judith Hanscom

August 8, 1941 — May 7, 2022

ORRINGTON - Judith Barbara “Judy” (Burke) Hanscom, 80, passed away Saturday, May 7th, 2022, at a Bangor Hospital. Her suffering has ended after many years of declining health due to Parkinson's Disease. She was born August 8, 1941, in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.

Judy moved to Stetson, Maine as a young girl, with her mother, Martha, and sister, Mary. She was a graduate of Brewer High School, Class of 1959. She and her husband, Harry made a home in Orrington and had four children; Ronald, Gerald, Debra, and Andrew. Judy was the grandmother of seven and had her home proudly littered with their photos.

Judy was a voracious reader and was the secretary/treasurer for the Orrington Public Library for many years. One of her greatest loves was reading to children and would remind anyone, "nothing can replace the time spent reading stories to young children." She later became a Title One Teaching Assistant for the Orrington Elementary School. Mrs. Hanscom helped many, many children sound their words out, correct their grammar, applaud their accomplishments, and happily tie a shoe and open a difficult milk carton. Her love for young people was boundless, and they certainly loved her.

Judy traveled extensively throughout Europe. She loved riding along on a tour bus; she would marvel at the fjords and countryside, snap picture after picture of an overflowing window box or a herd of sheep. "After you've seen one castle you've seen them all, but look at the azaleas!"

Anyone who was fortunate to know Judy's gardens could attest to the beauty she brought to the landscape. Her peonies were second to none, her roses produced more buds than a Maine winter should allow, and "if the deer would leave my tulips alone we could enjoy those, too. But oh well, I'm glad they enjoyed the buffet."
One of her greatest pleasures was her annual blueberry picking trip to Mr. Drisko's fields. Hours and hours she would happily spend with Mrs. Shyka, picking each berry that might as well have been gold. Some years the fields would be abundant, others "not so good". It didn't matter. She was already thinking about next year and hoping Mrs. Shyka would be ready.

Judy is survived by her husband, Harry, of Orrington; son, Ronald, of Brewer; daughter, Debra Levesque and her husband, Richard, of New Hampshire; son, Andrew and his wife, Abbey, of Tennessee; grandchildren, Samuel, Aynalem, Dinkenesh, Walter, Phoebe and Madeline . She is also survived by her sister, Mary Knowlton, of Orono; cousins, Lillian Freeman, of Washington, and cousin, Michael Rickson of Illinois. In addition to her parents, Judy was predeceased by her infant son, Gerald and her beloved grandson, Daniel.

A celebration of Judy's life will be held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 17, 2022, at the East Orrington Congregational Church, 38 Johnson Mill Rd, Orrington. Those wishing to remember Judy in a special way may make gifts in her memory to the Orrington Public Library, 15 School St., Orrington, ME 04474, to further Judy's love of the written word.
