June Smith

June 6, 1932 — January 31, 2014

Veazie-
June Hollis Smith, 81, of Veazie hoped to live forever, but sadly cancer changed her plan and took her from us on January 31, 2014. June was the center of her large, loving family. Born June 6, 1932, the daughter of the Clyde and Attalie Hollis of Veazie, June married Benjamin C. Smith in 1954 after serving for a year as a secretary in the Washington D.C. Office of Senator Margaret Chase Smith. After marriage she was a home maker for 14 years before returning to the workforce as an Administrative Assistant at Husson College. She had the fondest memories of working with Richard Cohen and Clara Swan while at Husson. June later worked as the Administrative Assistant on Kelly 6 at EMMC and for Dr.'s Veits & Healey. Her crowning achievement was her 12 years of work at UMaine's Onward Program where her caring and encouragement helped many low income, first generation students attain their college education. June worked at Wiswell Farm Greenhouses in Orrington during her retirement where she saw many old friends and made new ones who kept her laughing. June was an active member of the community service organization, Altrusa.
June was predeceased by her parents, husband, Ben, of 49 years and sister, Dorothy Honey. It was her greatest sorrow to be predeceased by her daughter Lauren King of Sanford.
June is survived by her brother, Frank Hollis of Rockport, her three sons, Dan Smith and wife Ann, of Veazie, Lloyd Smith and wife Sheri, of Veazie, Roy Smith of Lewiston, 8 Grandchildren: Hannah Fettig and husband Abe, Theresa Collette and husband Scott both of South Portland, Emily Francis, Molly Smith both of Veazie, Philip Smith and wife Astrid of Orono, Garrett Wilkin and wife Kitty of Monroe, Stephanie Bamford and husband Mike of Brewer. June had special love and thanks to her nieces Lee Ann Honey and Lynn Cooke and her caring friend Caroline Weymouth.
June was an avid quilter and knitter. She made beautiful quilts and sweaters for all of her family including her beloved Great grandchildren Isabelle Collette, Ben and Will Francis, Madeline and Maxwell Wilkin, Jonah and Mabel Fettig, and Alex and Gabe Bamford.
June loved the ocean and her family will cherish the many happy times spent together at Hancock Point. Once June was your friend, she was your friend for life. She loved to talk with interesting people and learn about new things. A strong woman, June could talk with anyone about anything and always had stories and opinions to share.
June wanted her friends and family to gather for a “party” instead of a funeral service and so we will honor those wishes with a celebration of her life and friendship, 3-5pm, Saturday, February 8, 2014, at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center Street, Bangor.
Those who wish to remember June in a special way may make contributions, as June did, to Sarahs Cancer Hospitality House, Main Rd, Rt 1A, Holden, ME 04429, or online at www.sarahshouseofmaine.org. Condolences to the family may be expressed at www.BrookingsSmith.com.
