BANGOR - Katharine "Kae" (MacKenzie) Hill was born on March 24, 1913, in Regina, Saskatchewan, the daughter of Stella Webster and W. Ross MacKenzie. Kae passed away on Aug. 7, 2013, having recently celebrated her 100th birthday with family at The Lucerne Inn.
She attended the Bishop Strachan School in Toronto and the School of Nursing at Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal (affiliated with McGill University), where she met Allison K. Hill, her husband of 56 years. She became an RN in the Province of Quebec in November, 1935.
The Hills married and moved to his hometown of Bangor, where they raised three children. She became a U.S. citizen on January 8, 1941, and was a valuable member of the Bangor community for many years. Kae was an extraordinary homemaker; she also managed her husband's medical office from their home.
She volunteered her services to numerous community organizations and was a member and served on the boards of The Penobscot Valley Health Assoc. (PVHA), The Bangor Humane Society, and The Phillips Strickland House. She was a 60-year member of PEO Chapter B Sisterhood, and member and officer of The Junior League of Bangor. For many years she belonged to the Woman's Auxiliary of Eastern Maine General Hospital.
In 1991 she received the Louise P. Hopkins Award from PVHA for the high caliber of her service. Kae was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, where she was an Altar Guild member.
Kae is survived by her children, Carolyn (Hill) Rogers of Hebron, CT; Sally (Hill) Reed of Bangor; and A. Ross Hill, MD and Deborah of Brooklyn, NY. She is also survived by her grandchildren, William Rogers and his wife, Anita, of Hopkinton, MA; John Rogers and his wife, Afton, of Hiram; James Rogers and his wife, Coreen, of Hebron CT; and Laura K. T. Hill and Rachael A. Scharf of New York City; and by her great-grandchildren, Christopher and Amanda Rogers of Hopkinton, MA, and Devon and Nicole Rogers of Hebron, CT.
Kae's family wish to extend their thanks and appreciation to the staff members at Dirigo Pines, Winterberry Heights, Westgate Manor and St. Joseph Hospital, who collectively provided kind support and care to Kae during the past six years.
In keeping with Kae's wishes, a private memorial service will be held at noon on Wednesday, Oct. 9, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, conducted by the members of the PEO Sisterhood Chapters A & B-ME. Interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery, Bangor. Those who wish to remember Kae in a special way may make gifts in her memory to PEO Chapter B-ME for Scholar Awards for those pursuing a doctoral at an accredited college or university, care of Sandra M.
