Bangor - Kenneth “Ken” Joseph Ferland, 94, passed away July 12, 2019 at the Maine Veteran’s Home. He was born in Presque Isle, October 11, 1924 the son of Joseph L. and Blanche (Gagnon) Ferland. Ken graduated from P.I.H.S. Class of 1943. He served in the US Air Force as a combat veteran flying bombing missions on a B-24 with the 453rd B.G. 8th Air Force out of England. After the service he worked with his father and brother in a neighborhood grocery business. He then was employed by Avis Rent- a -Car, later purchasing the franchise . Ken was also an Exxon dealer and later was employed with Dead River Company retiring from there in 1989 and moving to Bangor. Ken was a member and commander of P.I. American Legion, a member and director of the P.I. Chamber of Commerce, former member of the rotary club of P.I., a member of the SAD #1 school board, a member and director of the P.I. Country Club, former member of the Knights of Columbus and the VFW. He also served as bail commissioner and justice of the peace for 17 years. Ken enjoyed playing poker with his buddies and was an avid golfer. Ken was predeceased by his parents, his wife Dorothy, son Joseph, brother Edward, sisters Viola, Bertha and Ida. He is survived by his brother Richard Ferland of Presque Isle; a daughter Lorraine Ferland and her husband Bob Ross of Sparks, MD; sons Ralph Ferland and his wife Susan of Scarborough, Kenneth “Kip” Ferland of Bangor with whom he lived; daughter-in-law Leanne Ferland and her husband Joe Perry of Belfast; grandchildren Kristian Philoon, Jonathan Ferland, Sarah Yonce, Tovah Kopan; great grandchildren Justin Null, Josie Walton, Parker Yonce, Madison Yonce, Josephine Ferland, Andrew, Alexander and Erik Kopan; a great, great grandson Ryland Null; and his special canine companions Moxie and Milo.
A Funeral Liturgy outside of Mass will be held 11 am. Saturday July 27, 2019 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. Burial will be at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Augusta at a later date. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor following the service.
