Larry Sawyer

March 9, 1938 — June 25, 2024

Larry A. Sawyer Sr., 86, passed away on June 25, 2024. He was born on March 9th, 1938, in Old Town, Maine, to the late Albert L. and Myrtie (Bowley) Sawyer.

He attended Winterport High School and entered the workforce as a teen in the carpentry trade. Larry started his professional career with Cives Construction Company as a carpenter foreman, and in his 16 years with the company he worked his way up to Project Superintendent, being in charge of papermill shutdowns and modifications. He worked for other companies throughout his career, including C.T. Main Construction INC., Wade & Seaway Construction Corp., and SW&B Construction Corp. These jobs would take Larry all over the U.S., as far as the Mississippi River, as south as Selma, Alabama, and throughout various mill locations in Maine. Following "retirement", he would saw logs with his portable Woodmizer sawmill for customers and get back into his talented woodworking skills with making and selling wooden toys. He spent several years traveling to craft fairs selling his toys. Larry was married in Frankfort, Maine in 1975 to Barbara McMillan, July 11th would have been their 49th wedding anniversary.

A big NASCAR fan, races could be heard from outside the house from the TV on race days. If he had to miss part of the race, it would be recorded and watched later. He had the chance to visit many of the racetracks in person in his travels.

In addition to his parents, Larry was predeceased by daughter, Barbara A. Worcester of Winterport, ME; nine siblings, Rita Brown, Betty Taylor, Albert Sawyer III, Eleanor Bartlett, Joyce Palmer, Marilyn Surette, Mary Ginn, Helen Willis, and Bessie Neal. He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara, sons, Larry “Sonny” Sawyer JR. and wife, Shawna, of Winterport, ME, and Peter Sawyer and wife, Sabina, of Centreville, VA; daughters, Bonnie Sawyer of Biddeford, ME, Debbie Hardy and husband, Al, of Hermon, ME, and Sherri Sawyer and fiancé, Jay, of Hudson, ME; stepchildren, Julia Haskell of Winterport, ME, Diana LeBlanc and husband, David, of Fayette, ME, and Joseph B.
