Larry Sherman

August 17, 1946 — April 21, 2016

Larry Mitchel Sherman, 69, passed away from complications of Front Temporal Dementia (Pick’s Disease) at Maine Veterans Home in Bangor, April 21, 2016, surrounded by his family. Larry was born, August 17, 1946, the son of Ted and Ethel (Devoe) Sherman.
Larry attended and graduated from Princeton High School in 1965. He proudly served in the US Navy from 1965-69, when he was injured and honorably discharged. He then went on to work for the City of Bangor as a firefighter for 27 years. In 1994, he retired from Bangor Fire as a Captain. He was then employed by Cyr Bus Lines in Bangor as the Office Manager. For years, Larry was also involved with the Masonic Lodge, Rising Virtue #10; the Order of the Eastern Star, Tuscan #148; and served as Past Director of the Anah Temple, Second Section in Bangor.
Larry was an extremely kind and gentle man who had a love for music and animals, especially horses, dogs and bald eagles; but nothing could compare to the passion and love he had for his family.
In addition to his parents, Larry was predeceased by a brother, Michael T. Sherman; stepfather, Manley Spear; and his grandparents, Barney and Mary Devoe. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Sharon (Tracy) Sherman; son, Michael T. Sherman II of Alabama and Bangor; daughter, Kimberly Lee and husband, Travis of Glenburn; two very special grandchildren, Jenna Marie Jameson and Eli Sherman Lee; brother, Terry Sherman and wife, Carol of Princeton; brothers in law, Robert Tracy and wife, Connie of Derwood, MD, Michael Tracy and wife, Cindy of Waldoboro, and Bruce Tracy and wife, Cara of Mathews, NC; uncle, Robert Devoe and wife, Elizabeth of Bangor; as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews. Larry will be fondly remembered and missed by many who knew him. The family would like to thank the staff and caretakers at Eastern Maine Medical Center and the Maine Veterans Home for the care and compassion Larry received through his last days. As Larry’s favorite song says, he is now “Going up to the Spirit in the Sky”.
Relatives and friends are invited to share in conversation and refreshments 1 – 3pm, Sunday, April 24, with Firefighter Honors performed by the Bangor Fire Department at 2:30pm, at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center Street, Bangor. Interment with Military Honors will be held 1 pm, Thursday, May 12, at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 163 Mt. Vernon Road, Augusta.
