C.P.O. Lawrence O. Oakes, Sr. USNA-(Ret), 85, passed away unexpectedly Sunday December 26, 2021 at N.L. EMMC from C.O.P.D.
He was born in Bangor, March 24, 1936, in Bangor, son of Sherman C. and Elizabeth (Schoppee) Oakes.
He attended Bangor schools then joined the USNR in July 1953, retiring December 1985 as Chief Petty Officer. He worked for the state of Maine at the Dorothea Dix Hospital for 38 years, retiring in 1996. Larry, as he was known to friends and family, was the consummate handyman. He could build or repair, just about anything.
On June 27, 1956 he married Ethel M. Grover and they raised four children in Orrington.
Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Ethel; two sons, Lawrence of Eddington, Owen and his wife Tracy of Orono, two daughters, Teresa and her husband Ian Willoughby of London, England, and Kimberly Petry and her husband Jon of Hermon; six grandchildren, Kristen Harvey and her husband Thomas, of Westbrook, Bradley Oakes of Bangor, Sarah Willoughby and Megan Clark and husband Jamie of London, England, Connor and Ryan Petry of Hermon; four great grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the staff at Northern Light Hospice and the Orrington Fire Department for their help to Lawrence and the family.
