Bangor – Leo J. Burke, 92 passed away peacefully, December 28, 2018, at a Bangor health care facility. He was born August 20, 1926, in Brewer, the son of Peter J. and Emeline (Conley) Burke.
Leo graduated from John Bapst High School class of 1946. Following graduation, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a dog handler, achieving the rank of Technical Sergeant. After returning home, Leo married Marilyn “Lynn” Lovell in 1952. They celebrated 66 wonderful years of marriage. Leo joined the Bangor Fire Department in 1951 and served the community for 22 years, retiring as a captain. He went on to work for Larry Mahaney, owner of the Bangor Holiday Inn, for 21 years.
Leo was an avid sports fan, attending all the local games and making annual trips to see the Boston Red Sox with his friends. He also enjoyed playing golf in his later years. He and Lynn enjoyed vacationing in Florida in the winter and Cape Cod in the summer.
He was predeceased by his sister, Frances; and a brother, Raymond.
In addition to his wife, Lynn, he is survived by his daughters, Debby Johnson, and her husband, Phil, of Tenants Harbor, and Bonnie Burke, of Warren; two grandchildren; Derek Johnson, and his wife, Amy, and Kara Bigelow and her husband, Linc; great-grandson, Jameson Bigelow; brother, Bob Burke; sisters, Irene McLellan, Barbara Viola, Jean Miller, Carol Picciotti; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are welcome to call 5-7 p.m. Thursday, January 3, 2019, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, where a Funeral Liturgy will be held 1:00 P.M. Friday, January 4, 2019. Interment will be in Mount Pleasant Catholic Cemetery, Bangor. Reception immediately following at Geaghan's Pub, 570 Main St. Bangor.
