Leon Higgins

BANGOR – Leon F. Higgins, II, 92, died peacefully April 22, 2016. He was born December 6, 1923 in Bangor, son of Donald S. and Marian P. (Harvey) Higgins.

Leon graduated from Bangor schools. After an interruption due to World War II, he graduated from the University of Maine with a Mechanical Engineering Degree. Major Higgins was a pilot in the Air transport and Air Force Reserve. He joined his father and brother Don in the family insurance business for many years. He retired in 1988 and joined his wife Audrey at ERA Dawson Real Estate, retiring in 2000. Leon learned love early from his parents and siblings. He first learned about God and Jesus on his mother’s knee then at Brewer Methodist Church with Rev. Charles Dartnell, Rev. Dr. George Curtis III and the Rev. Dr. James L. Haddix at All Souls Church, Bangor. They helped him put the lessons he learned into everyday practice. Active in community affairs, he served the Phillips-Strickland House, Rotary, Bangor YWCA as trustee, Child and Family Services, United Way, Mechanics Association, Bangor Fuel Society, EMMC, a hospice volunteer, Bangor Savings Bank Corporator. Veterans Interview Programs at Coles Museum and Troop Greeter were some of his favorites. Active in Masonry, Leon was a member of St. Andrews Lodge #83, AF & AM of Bangor, Scottish Rite Bodies, and an honorary member of the supreme council, 33 . Family, friends, flying, sailing, fishing, canoeing, hunting at Union River Camp, Southwest Harbor and anything outdoors was always fun and family gatherings were number “ONE”. He was an honest man and a mentor to some. Leon appreciated his world and tried to leave it a little better.

Leon is survived by his wife, Audrey; daughter, Laura Steller and her husband, Wayne; granddaughter, Jennifer Robicheau and her husband, Mike and their daughters, Ellee Grace and Ava Hope; grandsons, Kevin Barry and his wife, Sabra and their daughter, Lauren, Travis Barry and his wife, Erin; sisters, Elizabeth “Betty” Speirs, Julie Ann Reeves and brother, William “Bill” Higgins; many nieces and nephews. “Uncle Lee” will be remembered as a storyteller to many friends.

A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held 11 am Friday, June 17, 2016 at All Souls Congregational Church, 10 Broadway, Bangor with the Rev. Dr. James L. Haddix, pastor and teacher, officiating. A reception will immediately follow the service in the Church vestry.
