Leona Cary, 96, went to her heavenly home on Thursday, June 2, 2022, surrounded by family members and caregivers who loved her. She was born December 1, 1925, in Howland, the daughter of Lawrence and Annie (Wallace) Cousins.
When the Howland paper mill closed in 1939, Leona moved to Louisiana (LA) with her family. After completing high school and a obtaining a bachelor’s degree in business in LA, Leona returned to her beloved state of Maine. She worked at the paper mill in Old Town where she met her future husband, Richard Cary. Leona and Richard were married on Sept. 11, 1951, and Richard preceded her in joining the Lord in 2008. Her twin sister and closest friend, Leola Shows, also preceded her to heaven in 2021, joining their brothers Albert and Dennis and sisters Mary, Josephine, and Jeannette. Leona is survived by her children, daughter Catherine LeMay and son-in-law David Venekamp of Weston WV, sisters Lillian McKay of Old Town and Kathy Robinson of Hodge LA, brother Lewis Cousins of Hodge, LA, and numerous nieces and nephews and their families across the US from her family and Richard’s who were very special to her.
Leona was an avid reader, a lover of dogs, and a gifted educator who strove to make learning fun. She taught in several Old Town elementary schools during her long teaching career and she consistently met students where they were, accepted their differences, and loved them all. She was a patriotic American and a Christ follower. For several years, Leona resided at the Cummings Health Care Facility in Howland where she was cared for and loved by a dedicated and compassionate team. The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers at Cummings and from Beacon Hospice for their kindness, caring, and support.
A memorial service and celebration of Leona’s life will take place at the Pine Grove Remembrance Center, 1347 Hammond St., Bangor, ME on Wednesday, June 15, 2022 at 2pm.
