Leona Johnson

October 17, 1932 — December 7, 2014

BANGOR – Leona Phylis (Welch) Johnson, 82, died Dec. 7, 2014 at a local healthcare center. She was born Oct. 17, 1932 in Bradford, daughter of Roland E. and Thelma R. (Hanson) Welch.

Leona was a graduate of Bradford High School, class of 1950 and a 1951 graduate of Husson College, now Husson University. In 1953 she married Harold D. Johnson of Brewer. They met at Hincks Coat Co. in Bangor. Leona had been employed at the H. Blaine Davis Hardware of Machias, Hannaford Brothers and USF&G Insurance Co., both of Bangor. She will be remembered as a wonderful cook who enjoyed sewing and loved spending time with her grandchildren.

Surviving are her husband, Harold D. Johnson of Bangor; a daughter, Prudence L. (Johnson) Billings and her husband, Jerald W. of Brewer; a step-daughter, Diane J. Deans and her husband, George of Sullivan; grandsons, Connor and Cameron Billings, George T. and John Deans; a sister, Loretta Ryan of Glenburn; a brother, Eugene Welch and his wife, Lorraine of Veazie; many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Leona was predeceased by a brother, Raymond Welch.

A memorial service will be held 11am Thursday, December 11, 2014 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center Street, Bangor with pastor Donald Booker of the Bradford Baptist Church officiating. Spring interment will be in the York Hill Cemetery, Sullivan. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center Street, immediately following the service Thursday.
