Leslie J. Hanscom, 87, died July 3, 2015 at a Bangor hospital. He was born on Bean Ridge in Marshfield, November 2, 1927, son of William O. and Mabel (Bowker) Hanscom.
For eight years he attended a one room school in Marshfield. Leslie graduated from Machias High School Class of 1945. During his high school years he was a member of the Maine State Guard and for one summer, worked in Princeton as a victory farm volunteer. After high school, he worked for Border Express Inc. Then he joined the US Navy and was aboard the U.S.S Albany CA 123, out of Norfolk, VA., working in the gunnery department. After his naval duties he worked in the Machias area several years before being involved in the poultry business for 20 years. Later he worked for St. Regis Paper Co., then R.H. Foster Inc. for a span of 30 years. He was very active in town affairs and assisted in organizing the Marshfield Volunteer Fire Department, serving as chief for 20 years. He also worked for many years as dispatcher and driver for the Machias Volunteer Fire Department.
Leslie was a 50 year member of Warren Lodge #2 AF&AM of East Machias, a 32 degree mason and member of the York and Scottish Rite bodies, Washington Chapter #16, a member and past commander of St. Elmo Commandery #18, both of Machias, Blanguefort Commandery #13, Ellsworth, and St. Croix Council #71, Calais. Leslie was a life member of Millwee Chapter #18 OES, a member of the East Orrington Congregational Church, and served as a deacon for 6 years.
He loved to fish and hunt, especially out of Old Mill Campground on Moosehead Lake, Piper Pond and East Grand with special friends,Bob and Larry. He enjoyed many special trips with his sons and the rest of the gang.
Surviving are his wife, Charlotte Johnson Hanscom, three sons, Robert and Paul Hanscom and Peter Hanscom and his wife, Rose; two daughters, Brenda Cloney and Sandra Hanscom and her significant other, David Emery; grandchildren, Jason Vane and his wife Becky , William Clifton, Molly Hanscom, Amanda Hanscom, Kristy Hanscom, Samantha VanHorn and her husband, PJ; several great grandchildren; extended family, Deborah and Morey Hayes, Brenda and Joe DeRoche, Randall and Jennifer Johnson, Laura Johnson, Jonathan and Adele Thomas, Brandon Thomas and Melissa, Lydia and Clark Dhein, Mallory DeRoche , Dustin Jones, Grady Hayes, Kamrin, Kadin and Alexis Thomas and Alex Thomas; also special friend Dwayne, church family and camping family.
He was predeceased by a grandson, Joel Vane.
A service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday July 14, 2015 at the East Orrington Congregational Church, 38 Johnson Mill Rd., Orrington, with the Rev. Carl Schreiber. senior pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Brewer. There will be a reception at the church immediately following the service.
