Lester Knapp

July 8, 1924 — February 1, 2015

Brewer – Lester (Les) I. Knapp Jr. died on February 1, 2015 at Dirigo Pines, Orono. He was born on July 8, 1924 in a U.S. Navy hospital in Ancon, Panama. His father, Lester Knapp, Sr. was a torpedoman aboard a submarine. His mother, Grace (Beeden) Knapp was employed by the bank of Panama in Panama City.

Les was a Navy veteran during World War II, as was his younger brother, Paul, now deceased. After the family left Panama, they returned to the Boston area where Les, his brother Paul, and his sister Ruth attended area schools.

In the mid-forties, the family moved to Brewer. In 1948, he met and married Annie (Metcalf) of Talmadge. Out of this union came two daughters, Laurel and Andrea. Laurel and her husband Vernon Larson of Penn Yan, New York have a daughter, Lauren Davis and her husband Dan, and a son, Justin and his wife Kaitlin. Andrea, currently engaged to William Gross, and formerly married to Michael Young, has a daughter Amanda and her fiancé Mark Dugré, and a son Andrew and his wife Kari-Anne. Lester’s great-grandchildren are Wyatt and Levi Davis and Logan Young.

Les was employed by Railway Express Agency working both in the Bangor Terminal as well as the train service which he particularly enjoyed. He bid for and got jobs which took him all over the state, from Portland to Van Buren and out of Maine to Boston. During this period, Les received Christ’s heavenly love and forgiveness.

In the early fifties, Les had the opportunity to go into business which developed into a Christian book and music enterprise. This was quite successful for many years, until his retirement in 1986. It had proven to be a ministry very close to the hearts of both he and his wife, Annie. During his life, Les was ever grateful for the bountiful blessing of a close and endearing relationship with many “in the Christian community”. He often said to his wife how blessed he was to have had such a meaningful fellowship with other Christians, many of whom have already gone on before. They were ever in his prayers. Les also had a long and meaningful relationship with the Bangor YMCA. He made many close friends who contributed much to his life and he leaves his thanks to them.

Friends and relatives are welcome to call 1-2pm Saturday, February 7 at the Brewer Chapel of Brookings-Smith, 55 South Main St., Brewer, where a service will be held at 2pm. Following the service the family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Rooms of Brookings-Smith, also at 55 South Main St., Brewer. Burial will be at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Brewer, in the spring.
