Lewis L. Smith Jr.
Brewer – Lewis “Lewie” Smith, Jr. husband of Carole ( Strout) Smith, went home to be with his Lord and Savior surrounded by his loving family, on Sunday, December 20, 2015. Lewis was born in Bradford, May 22, 1932 the son of Lewis L and Berdena Helen (Skinner ) Speed Smith.
He attended Bradford Schools and Husson College. Lewis was also a graduate of Real Estate School and Liberty School of Claim Adjusting. Lewis was an active member of the Air National Guard from 1950 to 1954. He was a 50 year member of Mystic Lodge #65 AF & AM of Hampden, Anah Shriners and the Scottish Rite Bodies Valley of Bangor and Portland, also the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #1023 of Winter Haven, Fla.. Lewis tested milk for Knox and Lincoln Counties from 1957-1962. He owned and operated Carter Feed and Farm Supply as well as Bob’s Hardware for 26 years, which was named for his son Robert. Lewis took great pride knowing that the business he created is being carried on by his grandson, Matthew. Since retirement Lewis spent time in Maine and Florida. Lewis had a gift for gardening and was known for his beautiful gardening and landscaping abilities. He loved music, to dance, to laugh with others, to take a drive and eat out.
Lewis was a devoted, generous, loving man to all that knew him and he had a very large and loving family. Surviving in addition to his wife of 61 years Carole of Brewer are one son Robert W. Smith and friend Jan Hill of Bangor, two daughters and sons- in- law, LuAnn C. and Bruce Tibbetts of Dover-Foxcroft, and Kim H. and David Roberts of Brewer, and devoted friend and forever daughter ,Maria Thibodeau; granddaughters, Jessica and Gerald Kelly of Orrington, SMSgt. Bobbie Sue USAF and MSgt. Scott Dobberstein, USAF ret. , of Texas, Stephanie Burby of Winterport, Melissa and Phil Cadieux of Corinth, Molly and Chris Rogers of West Gardiner and Kasie and Tom Kinney of Wells. Grandsons, Matthew A Tibbetts of Dover-Foxcroft and Lt. Kaleb Roberts of the MEANG of Wells; great grandchildren Robbie Batron, Parker Kelly, Sarah Burby, Noah Burby, Karson Lewis Tibbetts, Claire Cadieux, Bryce Cadieux, Andrew Rogers, and Addison Rogers all of whom were his pride and joy; sisters, Irene Wade of Connecticut, Glennyse Legeza of Bangor, Shirley Clark of Bangor, Barbara and Roger Whitehead of Glenburn, Virginia and Gary Bryer of Edinburg; brothers, Albert and Norman Smith of LaGrange, Sheldon & Rita Smith of Passadumkeag; sisters- in- law, Nancy Smith of Atkinson and Marilyn Scribner of Corinth. Lewis will be remembered by several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He will be missed by specials friends very close to the family Roger and Trudy Bryce and Don and Diane Nason. Lewis was predeceased by Berdena Strout, Donald Smith, Amaryl Smith, Orrin Wade, Elden Clark, and Ernie Legeza.
Relatives and friends are welcome to call 5-7 p.m. Tuesday December 22, 2015, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St. Bangor, where a masonic memorial service will be conducted at 6:30 p.m. by the officers and members of Mystic Lodge . Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, December 23, 2015, at the funeral home, with pastor Stan Griffin and assistant pastor, Mark Arnold, of Corner Stone Baptist Church, Exeter, officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Bangor.
The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor, following the service.
