Bangor – Linda J. Barbee-Swan, 64, died unexpectedly April 5, 2016 at her home in Bangor. She was born April 15, 1951, in Galveston, TX, the daughter of Jim Barbee and Edna (Riech) Barbee. Her father died while she was very young, and her mother married Cliff Bemis, who raised her as his own.
Because Linda was a ‘service brat’, she pretty much traveled around the world, graduating from high school in Germany in 1969. Cliff and her mother settled in Old Town so she attended the University of Maine in Orono, receiving her Bachelor of Science degree in Art in 1974. After graduation Linda joined the police force at the University of Maine. Later she worked at Husson College as a clerk in the finance department. She also held jobs at WABI as a night board controller, at Kagan Lown in the finance department, and at Penquis CAP in the transportation division. Linda eventually was disabled due to complications with her diabetes. Lately, she started collecting coins, but she loved watching the Kentucky Derby, often having special parties in her home to watch the event.
It has been said of Linda that she was “the original flower child”. She loved her friends and her friends loved her. She was willing to help anybody on a moment’s notice. She fell in love with the waters and woods of Maine where she learned to fish and hunt like a real Mainer.
In addition to her parents, Linda was predeceased by her mother-in-law Jeanette Swan and a niece Sarah Bemis. In addition to her loving husband Mark she is survived by a sister Jane Small and husband William; brothers Vincent Bemis and wife Val, and Dennis Bemis and wife Kim; father-in-law Fred Swan; brothers-in-law James Swan and wife Jessica, and Scott Swan; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held 2pm, Saturday, April 16, 2016 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, with Rev. Grace Bartlett officiating.
