Linda Kennedy

March 8, 1942 — August 5, 2019

Linda D. Kennedy lost her courageous battle with pancreatic cancer on August 5, 2019 at her home in Hampden. She was born Linda Dell Wood on March 8, 1942 to Guy W. Wood and Velma Byron Wood in Houlton, Maine.

She attended Washburn schools, graduating from Washburn High in 1960. She continued her education at Husson College and later graduated from the Social Work Program at the University of Maine. Linda was a licensed social worker employed by the Eastern Maine Medical Center until she retired. Linda moved to Jonesboro where they spent many summers in the lovely home she helped design and winters in Estero, Florida. Social work was Linda’s calling, she loved helping people. She was an active, always involved member of the Jonesboro Union Church.

On June 24, 1962, Linda married William H. Kennedy. This year, they celebrated their 57th anniversary.

Linda enjoyed traveling and they toured the country in an RV. Linda was especially thrilled to experience travelling in Israel, a long, anticipated trip.

Linda was first and foremost a devoted mother to their two sons. She was an avid reader, loved to walk in the early morning, and enjoyed cribbage, classical music and singing. She especially enjoyed singing in the Jonesboro Church Choir conducted by their good friend Chris Plaisted. Just this past spring Linda and Bill sang in a production of South Pacific in Estero, Florida, where they have wintered for many years. Linda was a lover of cats, especially Max who predeceased her.

Linda was predeceased by her parents and is survived by her husband of 57 years, William H. Kennedy Sr., her two sons, William H. Kennedy Jr., wife Larissa and granddaughter Alexandra, B. Keith Kennedy, wife Dawnise, her children, Heather Barriault and was predeceased by Darren Barriault. She is survived by her sister Bonnie Wood, who will miss her best friend terribly and her sister-in-law Jane E. McGlauflin. She is survived by special cousins Wendell Wood, Clair and Marian Wood and families, and was predeceased by Donna and Frederick Hetherington and survived by their children, Deborah Burns and Leslie Yerardi. The family is grateful for the help and kindness of Debbie and Joe Burns of Bonita Springs, Florida during this sad and difficult time.

Linda was a devout person of great faith who lived a life of love and kindness toward all. She followed the teachings of Christ and St. Francis of Assisi. The St. Francis prayer engraved on a piece of Maine slate sat on the window sill over Linda’s kitchen sink. Linda’s life was well lived, she was a strong, compassionate person with a wonderful sense of humor who will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

The family wishes to extend our gratitude and heartfelt thanks to the staff of Beacon Hospice for their kindness and care during this sad time.

Services will be private for the family. Friends who wish may donate in Linda’s name to Sarah’s House, 346 Main Road, Holden, Maine 04429 or the American Institute for Cancer Research, 1560 Wilson Blvd. Suite 1000 Arlington, VA 22209. Condolences to the family may be expressed at BrookingsSmith.com
