Linda Varney

February 13, 1943 — May 13, 2023

JONESBORO - Linda F. Varney, 80, passed away peacefully to be with the Lord, surrounded by family, on May 13, 2023, following a brief illness. Linda was born on February 13, 1943, in Jonesboro, Maine, to Harry and Hazel (White) Watts.

On February 18, 1961, Linda married her childhood sweetheart, James W. Varney, also of Jonesboro, Maine. They were married for 62 wonderful years.

After graduation from Jonesboro High School and her marriage to Jim, her adventures as the wife of a U.S. Marine began. Over the span of 22 years, they lived in many places including North Carolina, Hawaii, Virginia, South Carolina, and Munich, Germany.

Linda began her banking career as a teller at American Express in Munich. She continued her career in Beaufort, South Carolina at Banker's Trust. After returning to Jonesboro in 1981, Linda was hired by Machias Savings Bank. She worked in many capacities, leading to her final role as Senior Vice President of Deposit Operations. Linda was with Machias Savings Bank for 29 years, where she had many beloved friends and family.

Linda was a committed member of her community. She served on the Board of Directors at Washington Academy in East Machias for 30 years, from 1988 to 2018. She was an active member of the Jonesboro Union Church, where fundraising with her famous blueberry pies was always admired.

Linda deeply loved her family, her friends, and her church. Her very presence enriched the lives of everyone she knew. She arranged flowers for weddings, altered gowns and dresses, made quilts, painted and papered walls, traveled miles to visit her family or just to be there to let you know you weren't alone. She loved nature, her flower gardens, and teaching her grandchildren the names of plants and birds. Story-telling and singing old songs to keep the history of her family alive was part of the very essence of Linda's life.

Linda will be missed by many. She is survived by her husband, James W. Varney, of Jonesboro; her children, Dennise Varney, of Old Orchard Beach, Randy and his wife, Jeannette Varney, of Jonesboro, and Troy Varney and his fiancee, Brandi Farrington, of Bangor; her grandchildren, Bryce and her husband, Travis Brestelli, of Westbrook, Connecticut; Ashley and her husband, Whitney Stevens, of Whiting, Ross McEwen, of Auburn, Tyler Varney and his wife, Keirstin, of Marshfield, Jackson Varney, of Bangor , and Cameron Varney and his girlfriend, Alexis Schneiderat, of Portland; her great-grandchildren, Kole, Kiana, and Kingsley Stevens, Peyton and Parker Varney, and Charlotte Brestelli; brother in-law, Kenneth Varney; sisters-in-law, Jane Smith Varney and June Holden Lowe; and many nieces and nephews.

Linda was predeceased by her parents, Harry and Hazel Watts; sisters, Charlotte Lowe Devincentis, Natalie Lowe Catalona, Leta Lowe Smith, Betty Lowe Varney, Mary Lowe Mawhinney McNeil; and brother, Dale W. Lowe.
A memorial service honoring Linda's life will be held on June 3, 2023, at 11:00 a.m., at the Jonesboro Elementary School.
