LOUIS JOSEPH BATAS
Louis was born in Somerville, MA, APRIL 10, 1930; Son of ALEJO B. and GERMAINME M. (COAT) BATAS.
Louis died on September 13, 2024 at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center after a short illness.
Louis graduated from Charlestown High School, Charlestown, MA and the University of Maine, Presque Isle, ME, receiving a B.A. with distinction. He also attended University of Maine, Orono, ME for graduate studies. He was also a Graduate of the Diesel Technical Institute, Enfield, CT.
Louis served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was a veteran of World War II and Korea, attaining the rank of Sergeant at 18 years of age.
He worked as a Camp Counselor, Marine, Longshoreman, Trappist Monk, Freight Handler, Warehouseman, and Inspector, as well as a Diesel Mechanic.
He was a retired employee of the Department of Defense, working in a civilian status for the Army, Navy, Air Force and Defense Logistics Agency.
Louis received Spiritual Formation as a Trappist Monk at Our Lady of St. Joseph Monastery in Spencer, MA.
He was an active Lay Apostolate of the Roman Catholic Church; serving the Archdiocese of Boston on the Executive Board of the Catholic Labor Guild and was Registrar of the Catholic School of Industrial Relation, in Boston, MA.
He served the tri-parish area of Charlestown, MA as the retreat coordinator for retreats at ST. Gabriel’s Monastery, Brighton, MA.
In Maine, Louis served at Holy Rosary Parish in Caribou, ME as a Lector, Choir Member, Folk Group member, Religious Education Teacher, Chairman of the Parish Council Education Committee, Youth Advisor, Cantor and CCD Sunday’s facilitator.
In Old Town Louis served St Joseph’s and St. Mary’s parishes (now merged and part of the Parish of the Resurrection of the Lord) as Eucharistic Minister, Lector, Parish Choir, Mass Server, and Sacristan. He presided at Word and Eucharistic Services, Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, and Morning Office of the Hours.
In Bangor he served St John’s Parish (now part of St Paul the Apostle parish) recruited as a Choir Member and as a Eucharistic Minister, Mass Server, Sacristan, Lector, and Soloist for “Irish Nite”.
He served the Labor movement as an Officer for the International Association of Machinist’s Local 150 Watertown, MA. He also served as an officer and teacher for Local 2943 American Federation of Government Employees. He was cited by the Business Agent of Locals 799, 800, and 805 of the International Longshoreman’s Association for service to the locals by non-union Longshoreman.
Louis was predeceased by his parents and his only Sister Marion G. Batas, who was a long-time executive administrator for New England Telephone and Telegraph (NET&T). He may still have some distant relatives in the Philippines and France.
Louis and Marion set up an endowed Scholarship with the University of Maine Foundation in Orono to benefit Boston Area Students attending the University of Maine at Presque Isle. It is their wish that these students will succeed and remember the Batas family from Charlestown, MA.
A memorial Mass for Sgt. Louis J. Batas will be held at Wednesday, 11AM, September 18th, 2024 at St John’s Church in Bangor Maine with Rev. Frank Murray officiating. Interment will be Thursday, September 19, 2024, in the Maine Veteran’s Cemetery, Augusta, ME, with full Military Honors.
