Loys L. Green, 92, passed away May 2, 2019, from cardiac surgery complications at a Bangor hospital. She was born October 11, 1926, in New Orleans, LA, the daughter of Luis Lozano and Cecilia Flick.
At age 5, her family moved to Long Island, NY. In the 1940’s after graduating from high school, Loys moved to New York City and worked as a professional dancer, initially at nightclubs including the Tropicana, and then in Broadway shows. In 1949, she was in the national touring company of “High Button Shoes,” where she met her future husband, pianist and composer, Sanford Green, whom she married in 1951. Loys was in the original Broadway company of “Guys and Dolls”, and performed, along with her husband, on Sid Caesar’s television show, “Caesar’s Hour.” Loys was also featured in live TV television commercials and performed in auto shows at the New York City Coliseum. After retiring from performing, Loys had a second career as a YWCA/YMCA swimming instructor and American Red Cross Instructor Trainer, teaching all levels of water skills, from beginning through synchronized swimming, lifeguarding, first aid and CPR, and led swimming exercise groups for breast cancer survivors and multiple sclerosis sufferers. She participated in Masters swim meets, earning gold medals and setting records for her age group, and, at age 82, she participated in the open water swimming portion of a triathlon in Oyster Bay, LI. Loys moved to Bangor in 2012 and soon became active in the community, swimming often at the Bangor YMCA. As well as being blessed with multiple talents, Loys had a warm, open heart, showing kindness and caring to everyone she met, and was always ready to offer aid to anyone in need. She was the most loving and caring wife, mother, and sister and will be sorely missed, fondly remembered, and carried forever in our hearts.
In addition to her parents, Loys was predeceased by her husband, Sanford Green. She is survived by her son, Lawrence Green of Ontario, Canada; daughter, Laura Green of Bangor; sister Cecilia Brown of Garden City, LI; brother and sister-in-law, Luis and Maryann Lozano of Southington, CT.
A Funeral Mass will be held 10 AM, Saturday, May 25, 2019, at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. John’s Catholic Church, 207 York Street, Bangor. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Bangor YMCA, 17 Second Street, Bangor, ME 04401. Condolences to the family may be expressed at BrookingsSmith.com.
