Bangor – LTC James Allan Merkel, Sr., 84, passed away December 10, 2016, at a Bangor hospital. He was born November 5, 1932, in Philadelphia, PA, the son of John G. and Dorothy (Keenan) Merkel, Jr.
Jim attended high school and college in Wilmington, DE. His 18 year military career included serving in the US Army, National Guard, and Army Reserve. Jim worked in Wilmington, DE for John G. Merkel and Sons, a family medical supply business, prior to moving to Maine in 1974, to purchase The Village Cove Inn, in Kennebunkport. After moving to Bangor he worked in sales of outdoor power equipment for many years. Jim was a long time member of the American Legion and the Knights of Columbus.
In addition to his parents, Jim was predeceased by his brother, John G. Merkel, III. He is survived by his loving wife, Anne; his son, James A. Merkel, Jr.; his daughters Linda Horton and Carolyn Frank; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and the beloved family dog, Sascha.
In keeping with Jim’s wishes, services will be private for the family. Those who wish to remember Jim in a special way may make gifts in his memory to the Bangor Humane Society, 693 Mt. Hope Ave., Bangor, ME 04401.
