BANGOR - Lucy Eleanor Thurston of Bangor, passed away August 7, 2023 at a local assisted living facility after two years of struggling with the effects of Dementia. Lucy was born on July 23, 1932 to Beatrice (Lamb) Baker and Forrest R. Baker of Orrington, Maine. Lucy was 1 of 5 children. Her brother Clarence and sister’s Peggy, Betty and Hazel all have predeceased her.
In her early life she was left a single mom of 3 boys. She worked long hours as a Waitress, and in a local Dry Cleaning firm. Basically doing anything she could to support her boys and give them the basics. Times were certainly tough for her then and she was alone, but using her indomitable drive she worked through a difficult period of her life. In the late 50’s she met the man she hoped to share the rest of her life with, a Bangor Policeman named Maurice “Mike” Thurston. Both of their lives changed for the better and they were happily married until his passing in April of 1994. From that moment forward she lived alone while waiting for her time to see him again.
Lucy loved to dance and was a big country-western fan. She couldn’t keep her feet still to most anything generating a rhythm. If there was a church bean supper or a good ole country dance, you would usually find her there socializing and surely talking about her boys. She was an avid Crocheter and Knitter and would often make family members beautiful blankets, mittens and the like. Mostly though, she simply loved spending time with her family. In her later years, her eldest son, John, visited his “Best Bud” daily and would play cards, put together puzzles, watch TV and movies and basically just hang out with her. She loved it, and so did he!
Lucy was the matriarch of a large family and is survived by 3 sons, John Leture, Richard Leture and Tim Leture (her boys) whom she adored and had a life-long devotion to, as well as their wives Janet Leture, Patricia Leture and Luz Leture. She would have done anything for any of us at the drop of hat. Lucy also had another son, Stephen Leture, who died in 1962 as an infant but has never been forgotten, as one of her grandsons was later named Stephen in honor of our fallen little brother. Lucy was also blessed to have 7 very special grandchildren; John Jr., & Tammy - Melissa & Vanessa - Stephen, Sarah & Paola. She also has a total of 20 wonderful great and great-great grandchildren; Emily & Jordan, Amanda & Ben - Ruby Rose & Cayden - Britney, Elizabeth & Catherine - Brandon, Brady & Isabella, Myah & Emma, Grant, Reagan, Jayden, Elijah, Malakai, and Harlow.
A graveside service will be held 11am Saturday, August 12, 2023 at Mount Hope Cemetery, Bangor. Condolences to the family may be expressed at BrookingsSmith.com.
In the meantime, go and rest in peace Mom. We’re gonna be OK. Say hello to everyone for us.
