M. Soper

ORONO - Louise (Illenberg) Soper died peacefully at the age of 91 early on December 26, 2019 at Dirigo Pines. She was born on August 5, 1928 in Goshen, NY, the oldest of five children of Walter and Marian (Gregory) Illenberg.

Louise graduated from Washingtonville High School in 1946 and went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree at Oswego State Teachers College and a Master’s Degree from Plattsburg State Teachers College and taught elementary school. Before retiring, Louise was a Reading Specialist at Newcomb Central School (NY) and Pasco County Schools (FL).

Louise re-located to Maine from Florida to be near her son, John and his wife following the death of her second husband. She resided at Dirigo Pines where she enjoyed many new friendships and participating in many of the activities. Louise was a member of the Orono United Methodist Church. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Her family would like to thank the staff and volunteers at Dirigo Pines and Northern Light Hospice for their wonderful care.

Louise had many interests. She loved making quilts and her quilts adorned the homes of her children and grandchildren. She also loved to cook and her holiday fruitcakes were a specialty. She was well read and loved a lively discussion on current affairs. She loved to knit and made hats, scarves, and mittens for all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Louise is survived by her daughter, Nancy Larison of Tucson, AZ; son, John (Carol) Gregory of Old Town, ME; and son, Richard (Virginia) Gregory of Midland, MI; four grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and several special nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her sister, Elsie Coughran of LaPalma, CA; and brother, Gregory (Lorraine) Illenberg of Henderson, NV.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Joseph Gregory in 1969 and her second husband, Philip Soper in 2011. Her brothers, Harry Illenberg and David Illenberg also predeceased her.

Those who wish to remember Louise in a special way are encouraged to make gifts in her memory to the Orono Public Library, 39 Pine Street, Orono, ME 04473 or to the Orono United Methodist Church, 36 Oak Street, Orono, ME 04473.
