Captain Mack W. Gwinn, Jr. (1944–2024)

LEVANT - Mack Gwinn, Jr., 79, died March 11, 2024, at the Maine Veterans’ Hospital in Togus. He was born in Quincy, Florida in 1944, to Mack W. Gwinn, Sr. and Jean (Jernigan) Gwinn.

Growing up in a military family, Mack lived in several areas during his childhood, including Bangor, Maine where, at the age of 14, he met his future wife, Crystal Mayo. Mack joined the U.S. Army Special Forces in 1961, and served until 1972. During his military service, including seven deployments to Vietnam during the war, he was awarded four Purple Hearts and the Gallantry Cross with Bronze Star, the latter for displaying heroic conduct while engaged in combat. Following his retirement from the Army, Mack began his lifelong career as an inventor and entrepreneur, ultimately filing nine patents.

Mack is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Richard A. Gwinn, as well as several beloved pets. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Crystal; sons, Mack Gwinn III, Rick Gwinn (Francis Vogt), and Ryan Gwinn; daughter, Kristen Gwinn-Becker (Amy Gwinn-Becker); grandchildren, Crystal Kozerow (Craig), Andrea Gwinn, Cameron, Mathias, and Nolan Gwinn; great-grandchildren, Abby Graham and Theo Kozerow, and sister-in-law, Ardis Mayo (MaryEllen Rodda).

The family wishes to convey their deepest gratitude for the many years of compassionate care the staff at the VA Patriots Place, Hospital, and Hospice provided to Mack.
