Presque Isle - Malcolm Shapiro, 91, died peacefully on November 8, 2019 after a long illness. Malcolm was one of six children born in Rockland, Maine to Nettie and Samuel Shapiro. His twin brother, Meredith, predeceased him. After graduation from Rockland High School, Malcolm enlisted in the Army. It was during his service that his artistic talent came to be viewed by the public. A large mural he painted on an Army base building, received national recognition in STARS AND STRIPES Magazine.
After completing his service, Malcolm moved to New York City where he studied acting with Madame DeCanova. Although he loved the stage, he didn’t enjoy being a starving actor. Instead, he joined his twin brother, Meredith, and opened Malmark’s, a well-known men’s and women’s clothing store on Main Street, Presque Isle. As a vibrant, enthusiastic member of his beloved community, Malcolm organized and performed in the town’s Sesquicentennial Celebration. His performance is still remembered as the one that “brought down the house”.
In later years, he took up his paintbrush in earnest. Several one-man shows at local businesses, and the Wintergreen Arts Center earned him much deserved praise, encouraging him to continue painting until only a few years ago.
To say Malcolm was beloved by his family and friends is an understatement. A visit with Uncle Mac always promised to be entertaining, peppered with hilarious jokes, and a burst of energy to go out, get a lobster roll, go shopping, and take a ride down the coast. He loved movies and art shows, admired beauty in all forms, whether it be the faces of his loved ones or the sleek lines of his Lincoln. He loved traveling to warm climates; Cuba, Jamaica, and especially visiting his nieces Charlotte Gopan Jerace and Jane Gopan in Florida. He had a special connection with animals, and most of all, he loved to dance!
Malcolm is survived by his sister, Elizabeth Gopan of Bangor, Maine, ten nieces and nephews, their spouses and partners, and several great-nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his dearest friend, Eva Kirk, who, with her husband, Bernie, and daughter, Shannon, provided a level of comfort and loving care that eased him throughout his illness with dignity, respect and friendship.
A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday November 12, 2019 at the Jewish Community Funeral Chapel, 118 Center Street, Bangor, with burial to follow at the Beth Abraham Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Rooms of Brookings-Smith, 55 South Main Street, Brewer immediately following the burial.
