Margaret Anne Mouradian

January 5, 1932 — October 8, 2019

Brewer- Margaret Anne (Howatt) Mouradian, or Maranne, as she was often called by friends and family, died peacefully with family at her bedside on October 8th, 2019. She lived for the past 18 months in Falmouth but spent most of her adulthood in Brewer. She was born at a private hospital in Brewer on January 5, 1932 to Amy and F. Stanley Howatt. Her father was Superintendent of Mt. Hope Cemetery. Her mother grew flowers which she sold for funerals which helped finance Margaret’s college education. She had one older brother William (Bill) who she considered to be a lifelong friend. Her parents were originally from Prince Edward Island and she had fond memories of family summers there. Maranne spent her childhood in Veazie and attended John R. Graham School. She worked during her teen years at the local diner, Blaisdells. She attended Bangor High School from 1946 to 1950 where she enjoyed being a cheerleader and received excellent grades. After graduation from high school she enrolled at the University Maine at Orono and made many new friends through the sorority she joined, Alpha Omicron Pi. Margaret and William “Bill” Mouradian were married on August 16, 1952. They moved to Boston while Bill completed dental school and Margaret finished her undergraduate degree in nutrition at Simmons College. After they both graduated in 1954 they moved to Westover Air Force Base in Massachusetts where Bill spent two years as a dentist in the Air Force. They started a family while they were living there and returned to Bangor in 1956. Bill established a dental practice and Margaret raised a growing family in Bangor until they moved to Brewer in 1961. In the fall of 1979, once the children were older, Margaret enrolled in the Dental Hygiene Program in Bangor. Upon graduation she passed the dental hygiene boards with the highest score of any graduate of that school up to that time. She joined Bill in the dental practice where she worked until the practice closed in 2010. She loved her work there and as a team they made a dental visit a social event.
On her days “off” Margaret especially enjoyed time spent with her grandchildren and taking craft classes. She became an avid quilter and also enjoyed knitting. Over the years she made many beautiful quilts and other gifts for family members. For several years after the children were grown Bill and Margaret had the opportunity to travel, often with her brother and his wife Joyce. One of the highlights of these trips for Margaret was a trip to Thailand. In her later years, she had a wonderful group of friends, particularly a group of local women who were part of a monthly Monday afternoon book club, MPM. Bill and Margaret were married for 64 years. She is survived by her children and their families, Laurie Mouradian of Orono, ME (her daughter Monica Tucker and children Sophia, Luis & Jaxson Tucker), Robert and Angela Mouradian of Canton, MA (their children Ben and Emma Mouradian), Libby Mouradian (her children Avery and Maggie Topel) and Jim Feury of South Portland, and Melinda (Mouradian) and Kevin Carr of South Portland, ME (their children Bryan Adams and his wife Carrie Mead and Amy (Adams), her husband Steve Amico, and their child, Edison Amico). The family would like to extend a special thanks to caregivers from Aging Excellence in Bangor and in Portland, as well as the care team at Ocean View in Falmouth and Compasses Hospice for their phenomenal care of Margaret over the past several years. A celebration of her life will be held 2 pm. Monday October 14, 2019 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor.
