PHILADELPHIA PA & ORONO - Margaret Eakins Barnes, called Peggy, died Tuesday, December 3rd peacefully in her home. She was born on August 13, 1923 in Philadelphia. She lived in the suburbs of Philadelphia and summered on the New Jersey shore. In 1993 she moved to Orono, Maine.
Family was important to Peggy. She made holidays special with delicious food and beautifully crafted gifts, such as Portuguese fisherman sweaters, brightly colored socks and lovely needlepoint. She was interested and well-read in military history, especially World War I and II, the Civil War, and the Revolutionary War. She was devoted to her pets, her favorite being a poodle named Butze. Most recently she had a cat called “Dear Boy”.
Peggy graduated from the Stevens School in Germantown, Pennsylvania and attended the Philadelphia Academy of Art. She was a member of the Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church. She volunteered as a gray lady at Bryn Mawr Hospital, taught Sunday school at Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church, chaired the Candy Booth at the Emergency Aid Christmas Fair, and volunteered in the Malvern library in Pennsylvania and the library at Eastern Maine Medical Center.
She was predeceased by her parents, Gladys and Walter Eakins, as well as her best friend and sister, Suzanne Fotterall. She was also predeceased by her two husbands: Dr. Samuel Victor King and William Wesley Barnes. She is survived by her daughter, Margaret Campbell, son-in-law, Christopher Campbell, her granddaughter and husband, Camilla and Timothy Shannon, her great grandchildren, Emma and Henry Shannon, her niece and husband, Suzanne and Franklin Seeley, her nephew and wife, Law and Kathleen Fotterall, her grand nieces, Olivia and Cordelia Seeley, Cordelia’s partner Nathan Woodbury and her great grand niece Peyton Lynn Woodbury.
