MARGARITA A. SOROKIN
1923-2015
Margarita A. Adamson Sorokin passed away on June 6, 2015, as gently as she lived. In her 91 years she had seen and adapted to many changes. The daughter of two veterans who fought against the Communists in the Russian Civil War, she was born in Istanbul, Turkey, in 1923. She never knew her father, who died of wounds sustained in the war. Margarita was raised by her mother, who worked as a cook and housekeeper, barely making ends meet but ensuring that her daughter received a proper education at a private school run by an order of Austrian nuns (in Istanbul). Upon finishing school, Margarita enrolled in a nursing program at the American (Admiral Bristol) Hospital in Istanbul and after graduation was employed there.
In 1947 she was wed to Vitaliy N. Sorokin, the son of Russian immigrants. A year later their first son was born, and she left nursing to care for him. Five years later she gave birth to a second son.
Political and inter-ethnic strife in Turkey led to the family's emigration. In early 1957 they arrived in the United States and settled in Syracuse, New York. Supporting a family of seven (both mothers and Vitaliy's father also immigrated to the US) required additional income, so Margarita began work that year at the Syracuse United Cerebral Palsy Clinic as a physical therapist. She loved working with the children and their families, many of whom returned the kindness by maintaining contact with her well after the children grew up and Margarita retired from the Center at the age of 62.
While in retirement she was active in her parish, St. Mary's Russian Orthodox Church in Syracuse, and provided much practical help to aging parishioners. She swam regularly with a seniors swimming group and exercised daily through walking. She was a loving grandmother to her four grandchildren and a living example of heartfelt kindness to her husband and sons.
After her husband's death in 2006 Margarita lived with her sons, dividing her time between Bangor, Maine, and Bowie, Maryland. At the end of 2010, as a result of medical complications, she lost the ability to walk. She was moved to a nursing home with round-the-clock care in Brewer, Maine, where her life's journey came to an end.
She was predeceased by Vitaliy, her husband of 59 years. She is survived by her sons, Nikolai (Kathleen) of Bowie, Maryland, and Serge (Debra) of Bangor, Maine; four grandchildren, Elizabeth (Justin) Maleson of Chicago, Anissa Sorokin (David Arocho) of Bowie, Katherine Sorokin of Portland, and Gregory Sorokin of Brewer; and a great-grandson, Sawyer Maleson.
Burial services are scheduled for 11 AM at the Russian Orthodox Holy Trinity Monastery's cemetery in Jordanville, NY.
