ORONO – Margene W. Smith, 87, passed away peacefully, September 4, 2020, surrounded by her children and caregivers. She was born October 28, 1932, in Huntsville, Alabama, the daughter of Reverend Jesse and Beatrice (Sexton) Wilbanks.
Margene graduated from Hazel Green High School in 1951. She met the love of her life, Richard L. Smith, of Bangor, Maine, while he was stationed at nearby Redstone Arsenal Army Base. They married and had their first child, Pamela. Richard soon longed for his family in Maine and Margene knew it was important for them to start a life there. They had four more children together. They made a beautiful life side by side and are finally together again after fourteen years apart.
Margene was a devoted member of the Columbia Street Baptist Church. She served her Lord in many ways, including serving as Chairman of the Missions Committee and as Sunday School Superintendent. She taught Sunday School and Bible School and was a member of Ruth Harris Circle. Margene was always willing to serve in any manner she could.
Margene was very involved in mission work. She travelled to the Dominican Republic and Hong Kong to support missionaries and often invited visiting missionaries to stay in her home. She especially enjoyed hearing about their work.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, Richard L. Smith.
She is survived by her children, Pamela DePaul and husband, Anthony, of Cranston, RI, Gary Smith and wife, Renée, of Bangor, Karen Smith and husband, Joe Canales, of Spring Valley, CA, Janet Wheeler and husband, Kevin, of Yuma, AZ, and Kimberly McKay and husband, Terrance, of Bangor; Grandchildren, Emily DePaul and husband, Ryan Sheehan, Jenna Rezendes and husband, Jonathan, Laura DePaul, Jesse Smith and wife, Mandie, Courtney Colton and husband, Matthew, Justin Wheeler, Heather Wood and husband, Travis, Terra McKay, Jacob McKay, and Jared McKay; 11 Great-grandchildren, two of whom are with Margene in heaven; Siblings, Sue Presnall, Jessie Wayne Wilbanks and wife, Shirley, Wanda Taylor and husband, Rick, Debbie Kirk and husband, Calvin; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Margene's family gives special thanks to her devoted caregivers, Melinda Manjourea and Jodi Jackson, the wonderful staff at Solstice Senior Living, and the caring staff at St. Joseph’s Homecare and Hospice, especially Dana Cassidy, RN.
Margene's family invites relatives and friends to call 5-7pm Tuesday, September 8, 2020, at Brookings-Smith Funeral Home, 133 Center St., Bangor. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, masks are required at the visitation. A graveside service will be private for the family.
