She was born April 16, 1925, to Robert and Agnes Anderson in Worcester, Massachusetts. After graduating from Worcester’s Classical High School, Margery earned a B.A. at William Smith College (Hobart University) where she was captain of the varsity basketball team, and then earned a M.S.W. at the New York School of Social Work (Columbia University). She practiced social work in Jersey City until 1950, when she married David Matlack.
After raising their three sons through childhood she resumed working as a medical social worker at several hospitals, principally at the Westchester Medical Center, Valhalla, New York and later, at Summit House in Bar Harbor, Maine.
Throughout the years Marge and David and their boys enjoyed summer vacations in Maine, camping and hiking and canoeing. In the late 1970’s when an opportunity came to buy a year-round house on Mt. Desert Island, Margery and David decided to move.
Margery served on the founding board of Friends of Acadia National Park, and she later devoted much time to the Southwest Harbor Public Library, both as a volunteer and as a Trustee and sometime president of the Library Board of Trustees.
Margery was very interested in her paternal grandparents who emigrated from Sweden. She and David made several trips to Sweden to visit cousins, and she learned Swedish in order to correspond with them.
High points for Marge were family gatherings; hiking and canoeing and cross country skiing with David and with the Downeast Outing Club;
walking trips in Sweden, Britain, and Italy; going to art museums, summer theaters, and symphony concerts.
She also enjoyed gardening and knitting.
She was predeceased by her brother, Robert and her sister, Dorothy.
She is survived by her husband, David; her son, Timothy and his wife, Cynthia; her son, Christopher and his wife, Margaret; and her son, Paul and his wife, Nancy; eight grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.
