BANGOR – Marguerite “Peg” Virginia (Katen) (Smith) Groves, 89, went to be with her Lord and Savior on September 6, 2019, surrounded by her loving family. She was born October 28, 1929 in Bangor, to Charles and Ella (Best) Katen.
Peg graduated from Bangor High School, Class of 1947. Following graduation, she worked at unemployment offices in Bangor and other cities. She worked for three surgeons in Bangor and at Eastern Maine Medical Center. Peg married Philip Leroy Smith on November 28, 1948 and they had 30 wonderful years together. Peg was a lifetime member of the Columbia Street Baptist Church where she was very active helping and visiting shut-ins. Peg loved to quilt, knit, crochet, sew, and work in her gardens. Most importantly are all the dear friends made over a lifetime of kindness and caring.
In addition to her parents, Peg was predeceased by her husbands, Philip Smith, and Elmer Groves; son, Bruce; sister, Charlotte; brothers, Charles, Raymond, and George. She is survived by her daughter, Sandy and husband, Robert; sons, Jim, Steve and wife, Ellen, Bill and wife, Shaunna; sisters, Maxine and Esther (Snookie;) sisters-in-law, Alice and Elaine; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and many dear friends.
The family wishes to thank Winterberry Heights Assisted Living and Memory Care for providing a wonderful fulfilling home and tender care. We also appreciate the excellent service of Northern Light Homecare and Hospice.
All are welcome to celebrate Peg’s life on Friday, September 13, 2019 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center Street, Bangor, Maine. Relatives and friends are welcome to call 11:00 a.m. until the time of service at 12:30 p.m. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St. Bangor, following the service. Interment will be at Marston Cemetery, 121 Snows Corner Road, Orrington.
