LEVANT – Maria Frances (Flynn) Hautala, 81, passed away peacefully in the early morning of October 8, 2021. She was born May 28, 1940, in Dorchester, Massachusetts, the first child of Edward and Julie (Cahill) Flynn.
Maria and her family lived in East Milton where she and her two sisters enjoyed their childhood years. After high school, she attended Boston State College, graduating in 1961 with a degree in Education. Her first teaching position was on Long Island, New York, where she taught Fourth Grade. In 1964, Maria packed her VW Bug and drove to Boulder, Colorado to begin work on a Master’s degree at the University. After graduating, she traveled to California, and taught a year at Half Moon Bay, then, returned to Colorado and secured a teaching position at Green Mountain Elementary, in Jefferson County. It was here she noticed a young man she wanted to get to know, who became her life-long partner of nearly 54 years. In time, the new family, which now included their first child, Kirsten, moved east.
After a couple of years in Ipswich and Newburyport, Massachusetts, during which time a second daughter, Erica, was born. The family moved to Maine and settled in the Bangor area. Maria resumed her teaching career, with positions in Old Town, Orono, and Dixmont. When she retired, she became a foster parent. It was during this time a third daughter, Donna, joined the family.
Maria was a longtime member of the Unitarian Universalist Society, of Bangor, the Guild, Women with Wings, and the Temple of the Feminine Devine. More recently, she enjoyed her membership in the Bangor YMCA.
Maria found happiness in life’s simple pleasures. She loved wild flowers, sunsets, bird watching, a walk on a sunny day, and the beauty of a full moon. She was happiest when with her friends and family. The sparkle in her eye and her kind and gentle way will be missed.
Maria leaves behind her husband, Bruce; daughters, Kirsten, Erica, and Donna (Bronwyn); grandchildren, Irja, Ada, Sophie, Mikayla, George, Charlotte, and Tessa; sisters, Eleanor (John) and Geraldine.
The family sends out a huge thank you to all the folks at St. Joseph’s Hospital, who provided such competent and heartfelt care for Maria, and her family during her last days.
In honoring Maria, she would be happy if we think of her as we take a moment and watch a little bird flittering about, notice a delicate wild flower, the beautiful colors of a sunset, or the soft glow of a full moon on a summer evening.
Maria sends her love to all.
A memorial service will be held at a date and time to be determined.
