Mary Rose “Cecile” (Damien) Spear passed away peacefully on May 3, 2016 with her daughters by her side. Cecile was born to Marie Ann (Roy) and Amos Emile Damien on December 17, 1923 in Old Town, Maine, the second of seven children- Alice Hale, Robert Damien (deceased), Velma Cote (deceased), Louis Damien, Marie Nogrady and Philip Damien.
Cecile was with us for 92 years and is survived by her five daughters - Nancy Leavitt and her husband Jim of Newburgh, Joan Belyea and her husband Steve of Hermon, Kathleen Kazmierczak and her husband Stephen of Winterport, Susan Palmer and her husband Rick of Brewer, Mary Jane Cote and her husband Joseph of Brewer; eleven grandchildren and many great grandchildren.
Cecile, a beautiful woman both inside and out is celebrated by her family for all that she was in life. She has moved from this world and is now free from all the human constraints of Alzheimer’s disease. She was a daughter, sister, wife, mom, aunt, grammie and great-grammie to a family who loved her.
As a wife and mother, she was a chef, seamstress, doctor, housekeeper, painter, landscaper, designer, avid reader and most important of all she bestowed unconditional love on her family and to all those that were lucky enough to know her.
The love of her life, Shirley B. Spear, passed on January 11, 2016. They met in Presque Isle where they both worked at the base. Dad was the riveting instructor and Mom was one of his students. Mom was proud to have served her country as a “Rosie the Riveter.” They married April 29, 1944 and spent 71 years as each other’s anchor enjoying, and at times weathering, the journey on the sea of life. For over forty years the cottage on the shore of Allen’s Cove in Brooklin was the center of life for Cecile from early spring to late fall. She entertained friends with her fabulous cooking, tended to her many flowers, enjoyed long walks, played scrabble when the opportunity arose and loved having family gatherings. Trips to Myrtle Beach for winter getaways became part of the yearly sojourns out of the winter weather of Maine for her and Shirley. Her final stop along her life’s journey has been at Ross Manor in Bangor for the past year.
Her story was long and had many blessings and adventures along the way. Cecile’s journey now ends in celebration by those of us who have been lucky enough to be part of her story. Merci Beaucoup, Momma!
Cecile’s daughters want to express sincere and heartfelt appreciation for the love and care given to Mom by the staff at Ross Manor.
