Marie Stern, 87, passed away peacefully in her home overlooking the Penobscot River on September 5th 2015 after a courageous battle with pneumonia and paralysis from a major stroke.
Marie was born September 10th 1927 in Baltimore, Maryland. The daughter of William and Josephine Peroutka. She attended Notre Dame High School and the College of Notre Dame in Baltimore. Marie began her career as a blood analyst at South Baltimore Hospital and gained prominence as a food chemist at McCormack and Company where she was instrumental in developing the original tartar sauce recipe for McDonalds Corporation. Eventually, Marie became a food consultant while raising three children; Jon, Cindy, and Marty.
Marie and her husband Norman Stern were married October of 1978 and they resided in Maryland and Maine. Marie was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She very much enjoyed spending time with her family and pets.
Marie will be remembered for her many accomplishments and pursuits. As an emulsion specialist, she volunteered for projects sponsored by IESC ( a State Department affiliated organization), in developing countries and continents such as Costa Rico, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Columbia, Ecuador, Africa, and Bulgaria. These specialized projects included teaching the local population about operating food processing equipment, developing recipes and formulas, and purchasing locally available raw materials. The finished products such as mayonnaise, mustard, hot sauce, and other condiments were available on the local supermarket shelves in five weeks.
In addition, Marie and her husband were distinctive members of the Appalachian Trail Club of Maryland and were caretakers of several sections of the trail.
Marie and her husband were avid travelers who didn’t hesitate to venture to different parts of the world such as Europe, Scandinavia, South America, Africa, Israel, Egypt, Russia, Germany and Austria.
She spent the last three and a half years of her life in her home in Hampden, Maine surrounded by endearing and wonderful friends, family and dedicated nurses. She was an inspiration to all for her modesty, sense of humor, and care for others. Marie will be deeply missed with heartfelt love.
Marie is survived by her husband, Norman Stern; her brother, William Peroutka; two children, Jon and Cindy; one step son, David; five grandchildren, Jamie, and Jamie, Jeffrey, Brian and Erica, Elisabeth, and Jennifer; two step grandchildren, Rachael and Benjamin; one great grandchild, Elija.
She was predeceased by her mother and father; her sister Josephine; and her son, Marty.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Monday, September 7, 2015 at the Jewish Funeral Chapel, 118 Center St. Bangor. Interment will be at Beth Israel Cemetery, Mount Hope Avenue. Relatives and friends are invited to share in conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St, Bangor, following the interment. A memorial visitation will be held 5-7 p.m. Monday, September 7, 10 a.m. -12 p.m. and 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, September 8 and Wednesday September 9 at the Sterns home, 79 Summer Street, Hampden.
