BLUE HILL – Marilyn Willena (Gangerdeen) Litz, 75, doggedly battled end stage renal disease but dialysis proved too formidable an opponent and she passed away peacefully in her sleep on November 18, 2018.
Born September 17, 1943 in Trinidad and Tobago, Marilyn graduated from Naparima Girls’ High School where she excelled academically and played the piano. She worked as a teacher at a convent before leaving the Caribbean to study Geology at the University of New Brunswick. Marilyn met and married Henry Litz of Presque Isle whilst the pair were students in Canada. They lived in Halifax, Nova Scotia before settling in Maine.
Marilyn was a great mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She and Henry raised four children. She was engaged in the community classical music scene and volunteered for several organizations, including the Fort Fairfield Arbor Committee. Marilyn taught high school math and science, and earned an MBA from Central Michigan University. Her friends and family will miss her kindness and selflessness, and remember her for her patience and grace. As a widow, Marilyn moved to Blue Hill and leaves behind many friends at Parker Ridge who will fondly remember her and her sweet dog Sasha.
Marilyn’s greatest gift to the world was her nurturing spirit. She had the uncanny ability to connect with others and listen to their stories. People trusted her and benefited from her calm demeanor. She gave without expectations and those that knew her, or were lucky to enjoy a meal prepared by her hands, are better for it.
Marilyn was predeceased by her mother, Sheila Corbin, father Donald Gangerdeen, husband Dr. Henry Litz, and sister, Gloria Dawn Williams. Her memory will be cherished by her sister, Grace Eligon and husband, Leon and family of Port St. Lucie, Florida, and sister, Ann Marie Ghouralal and family of Trinidad and Tobago. She leaves behind a daughter, Vaneska Litz, and husband Darren Johnson of Hinesburg, Vermont, and their two children, Simon and Segolene, who loved their “Gamma”. She is also survived by a son, Adrian Litz and wife, Sarah Weber of Squamish, British Columbia, a daughter, Marisa Litz and husband, Greg Hutchinson of Olympia, Washington, and a daughter, Alison Litz and her partner, Marty Sherwood of Ellsworth, as well as a large extended family and friends.
A private graveside service will be held in the spring for the family. Interment will be in Fairmont Cemetery, Presque Isle. Those wishing to remember Marilyn in a special way may make gifts in her memory to The Aroostook House of Comfort, PO Box 867, Presque Isle, ME 04769 Condolences to the family may be expressed at BrookingsSmith.com
